DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. ? The first week in March is National Severe Weather Preparedness week and people in Davidson County know all too well how serious severe weather can be.
In November of 2011, an E-F 2 tornado started in central Davidson County and worked its way to Randolph County. Dozens of homes were destroyed or badly damaged and two people were killed.
Lynn Feredinos? restaurant, Skipper?s Seafood in Lexington, was hit so hard he said they were forced to shut down for months.
?It was horrible. It was like a war zone, debris everywhere,? said Lynn Feredinos, owner of Skipper?s Seafood.
Meadow Run Lane was one of the streets that saw a lot of damage.
Amanda Marshburn said she was home with her young son during the tornado. She said after that disaster she pays extra close attention to any type of severe weather threats.
?We take stuff very seriously actually, any kind of tornado warnings that come up we up pretty much all the night,? she said. ?We?re very alert to what goes on here, really ever since that?s happened.?
The goal of National Severe Weather Preparedness week is for community members to help heighten awareness about being ready if and when severe weather strikes.
Nationally, in 2012 there were more than 450 weather-related deaths.
