Wettest year drives down farm incomes

LONDON (Reuters) - Farm incomes are set to fall in England in 2012/13 with pig and dairy producers among the hardest hit as feed costs climb and the wettest year on record reduces crop yields and quality, Britain's farm ministry said on Thursday.

Specialist pig farms are expected to see a 50 percent fall in incomes to 19,000 pounds per farm and those of dairy farms projected to decline 42 percent to 50,000 pounds.

The 2012/13 season runs until the end of February.

The figures showed a third consecutive fall for pig farmers whose income is now barely more than a quarter of the 75,500 pounds reported in 2009/10.

"An unprecedented increase in the cost of feed which accounts for 60 percent of the cost of producing a pig was not supported by an increase in the price that farmers were paid for their pork," Zoe Davies, general manager of the National Pig Association, said.

"This put many businesses under severe pressure with the net result that around 17,500 sows were lost from the national herd last year," she added.

The beginning of the year had been dry, with the government calling a drought summit in February, but the deluge began in April and continued for much of the rest of the year, saturating farmland and causing widespread flooding on several occasions.

"The figures make sobering reading but will be no surprise for many in the industry," National Farmers Union chief economist Phil Bicknell said in a statement.

"Rising costs outstripped farmgate price changes for dairy and pork producers at times over the last year. More recently, we can add the plummeting lamb price to the list of challenges the industry faces," he added.

The ministry said the dairy sector was hit not only by a rise in feed costs but also by the need to purchase higher volumes due to a combination of reduced grazing days and low quality home produced forage.

Feed wheat prices in Britain for nearby delivery rose to a record high of 227.00 pounds a tonne in November last year as rains drove yields down to a 23-year low. A year earlier the price had fallen to as low as 140.00 pounds.

Income for cereal farmers in England fell by 11 percent to 84,000 pounds with higher prices more than offset by lower yields and quality.

Poultry was the best performing sector with income expected to be unchanged at 21,000 pounds per farm.

"In this sector, while feed costs are predicted to increase, a higher output from both broiler and egg production are also expected, resulting in average incomes being unchanged," the ministry said.

Israel conducts rare airstrike on Syria

BEIRUT (AP) ? Israel conducted a rare airstrike on a military target inside Syria near the border with Lebanon, foreign officials and Syrian state TV said Wednesday, amid fears President Bashar Assad's regime could provide powerful weapons to the Islamic militant group Hezbollah.

Regional security officials said Israel had been planning in the days leading up to the airstrike to hit a shipment of weapons bound for Hezbollah, Lebanon's most powerful military force and a sworn enemy of the Jewish state. Among Israeli officials' chief fears is that Assad will pass chemical weapons or sophisticated anti-aircraft missiles to Hezbollah ? something that could change the balance of power in the region and greatly hinder Israel's ability to conduct air sorties in Lebanon.

The regional officials said the shipment Israel was planning to strike included Russian-made SA-17 anti-aircraft missiles, which would be strategically "game-changing" in the hands of Hezbollah by enabling the group to carry out fiercer attacks on Israel and shoot down Israeli jets, helicopters and surveillance drones. A U.S. official said the strike hit a convoy of trucks but did not give an exact location.

The Syrian military confirmed the strike in a statement read aloud on state TV, but it said the jets bombed a military research center in the area of Jamraya, northwest of the capital, Damascus, and about 15 kilometers (10 miles) from the border with Lebanon.

The statement said the center was responsible for "raising the level of resistance and self-defense" of Syria's military. It said the strike destroyed the center and a nearby building, killing two workers and wounding five others.

The Syrian army statement denied that the strike had targeted a convoy headed from Syria to Lebanon, instead portraying the strike as linked to the civil war pitting Assad's forces against rebels seeking to push him from power.

"This proves that Israel is the instigator, beneficiary and sometimes executor of the terrorist acts targeting Syria and its people," the statement said.

The Israeli military declined to comment, and the location could not be independently confirmed because of reporting restrictions in Syria.

Hezbollah has committed to Israel's destruction and has gone to war against the Jewish state in the past. Syria has long been among the militant group's most significant backers and is suspected of supplying with funding and arms, as well as a land corridor to Iran.

This strike also comes as Syria is enmeshed in a civil war. The rebels have seized a large swath of territory in the country's north and established footholds in a number of Damascus suburbs, though Assad's forces still control the city and much of the rest of the country.

While Assad's fall does not appear imminent, analysts worry he could grow desperate as his power wanes and seek to cause trouble elsewhere in the region through proxy groups like Hezbollah.

Syria's government portrays the crisis, which started with political protest in 2011 and has since become a civil war, as a foreign-backed conspiracy meant to destroy the country.

Top Israeli officials have recently expressed worries that Assad's regime could pass chemical weapons to Hezbollah or other militant groups.

President Barack Obama has called Syria's use of chemical weapons a "red line" whose crossing could prompt a tougher U.S. response, but U.S. officials say they are tracking Syria's chemical weapons and that they still appear to be under regime control.

The strike, carried out either late Tuesday or early Wednesday, appears to be the latest move in a long running race by Hezbollah to increase its military power while Israel seeks to limit it.

Israel suspects that Damascus obtained a battery of SA-17s from Russia after an alleged Israeli airstrike in 2007 that destroyed an unfinished Syrian nuclear reactor.

Earlier this week, Israel moved a battery of its new "Iron Dome" rocket defense system to the northern city of Haifa, which was battered by Hezbollah rocket fire in the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war. The Israeli army called that move "routine."

The airstrike was the first inside Syria in more than five years. In September 2007, Israeli warplanes destroyed a site in Syria that the U.N. nuclear watchdog deemed likely to be a secretly built nuclear reactor. Syria has denied the claim, saying the building was a non-nuclear military site.

Syria allowed international inspectors to visit the bombed site in 2008 but it has refused to allow nuclear inspectors new access. This has heightened suspicions that Syria has something to hide, along with its decision to level the destroyed structure and later build over it.

Israeli warplanes flew over Assad's palace in 2006 after Syrian-backed militants in Gaza captured an Israeli soldier.

And in 2003, Israeli warplanes attacked a suspected militant training camp just north of the Syrian capital, in response to an Islamic JIhad suicide bombing in the city of Haifa that killed 21 Israelis.

Syria vowed to retaliate for both attacks, but never did.

The military in Lebanon, which also shares a border with Israel, said Wednesday that Israeli warplanes have sharply increased their activity over Lebanon in the past week, including at least 12 sorties in less than 24 hours in the country's south.

A senior Lebanese security official said no Israeli airstrikes occurred inside Lebanese territory. Asked whether it could have been along the border on the Syrian side, he said that that could not be confirmed as it was out of his area of operations.

A Lebanese army statement said the last of the sorties took place at 2 a.m. local time Wednesday. It said four warplanes which flew in over the southernmost coastal town of Naqoura and hovered for several hours over villages in southern Lebanon before leaving Lebanese airspace.

It said eight other warplanes conducted similar flights on Tuesday.

Another Lebanese security official said the flights were part of "increased activity" in the past week but did not elaborate. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the strike.

The U.N. Agency tasked with monitoring the Lebanon-Israeli border said in a statement Wednesday it had no information on any strikes near the Syria-Lebanon border. It did note, however, a "high number of Israeli overflights" on Tuesday.

"These air violations have continued on an almost daily basis," it said.

The area of Lebanon where the flights took place borders southern Syria.

Israeli violations of Lebanese airspace are not uncommon and Lebanese authorities routinely lodge complaints at the U.N. against the flights.

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 war, and Syria demands the area back as part of any peace deal. Despite hostility between the two countries, Syria has been careful to keep the border quiet since the 1973 Mideast war and has never retaliated to Israeli attacks since.

In May 2011, only two months after the uprising against Assad started, hundreds of Palestinians overran the tightly controlled Syria-Israeli frontier in a move widely thought to have been facilitated by the Assad regime, to divert the world's gaze from his growing troubles at home.

Jason London?s Craptacular Weekend Arrest

ade5e celebrity Jason London Mugshot 500x333 Jason London?s Craptacular Weekend Arrest

Jason London had a crappy weekend in the desert.

Quite literally, we mean.

London, who played Randall ?Pink? Floyd in ?90s teen comedy Dazed and Confused, was arrested on Sunday morning after allegedly punching a bouncer and soiling his pants in the back of a police car.

How charming

Drahmah reportedly ensued after an inebriated Jason sneezed on a bar bouncer and refused to apologize. According to a police report obtained by TMZ, Jason threw a punch at the bouncer?s face and was subsequently beaten up in and ensuing brawl.

Ejected from the bar, Jason was later found bloodied and ranted on the street When paramedics and cops arrived on the scene, the irate actor had to be physically subdued.

He bellowed:

?Guess what, fag*ot? I f***ing love this. I f**king own you guys so hard. I?m rich and I?m a motherf**king famous actor! F**king look me up, b***h. It smells like sh*t in your car and your breath smells like diarrhea. I told you I?m happy as sh*t.?

Jason, 40, continued to be verbally abusive on the way to the station, and at one point, defecated in his pants, police sources say. On Monday, cops spoke with Jason?s wife, Sofia, about the weekend incident.

?I know he?s an a**hole when he drinks,? was her reply. But she insisted that her husband has no recollection of his rumored walk on the wild side.

Jason took to Twitter yesterday to refute the allegations:

?Guys, the TMZ report is a total f**king lie. I got jumped by three 250-pound bouncers. They knocked me out and beat me for several minutes. I would never say or do the crap they are reporting. Have faith in me. The truth will come out and you will see. Some guy thought I was hitting on his girl and had me jumped. My wife was in the next room, had no idea what even happened. I hate Arizona. Wait till you see the real pictures. I have a right orbital fracture and sinus fracture. The truth will win.?

Those London boys sure know how to give the blogosphere a good chuckle. In 2010, Jason?s identical twin brother, actor Jeremy London, became an Internet laughing stock when he told police in California that he was ?kidnapped? by a carful of armed men and forced to smoke meth for 12 hours.

Dinner's on George Clooney in Germany!

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Dinner's on George Clooney! One group of diners at the Grill Royal restaurant in Berlin?were treated to a free meal because the actor was worried that he and his friends at a nearby table were making too much noise, Clooney's representative has confirmed to TODAY.

Mario Anzuoni / Reuters

According to English-language publication The Local, German newspaper Bild reported that Clooney and Co. weren't disturbing the others in any way.

"They had behaved in a very cultivated manner," one man in the group told the paper, "I was stunned."

According to The Local, the man never recognized Clooney, even when he stopped by the star's table to leave a business card in hopes he could repay the gesture some day.

The newspaper reported that the dinner bill was around 100 Euros, or $135 U.S.

It's far from Clooney's first generous gesture. Back in October, paparazzi captured a photo of the actor giving money to a man sitting on a New York street wearing military dog tags.

Clooney is in Germany to direct and star in "Monuments Men," an upcoming big-screen drama also starring Daniel Craig and Cate Blanchett. Based on Robert M. Edsel's book, the film is about a group of Allied art experts racing to save priceless artworks from destruction by the Nazis.

James Holmes seeks delay in hearing on Fox News report

By Vignesh Ramachandran, Staff Writer, NBC News

Attorneys for Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooting suspect James Holmes have filed a motion to postpone a hearing pertaining to a Fox News reporter and her sources.

The defense's court?documents filed on Friday?ask to move a Feb. 4 hearing in which Fox News reporter Jana Winter was expected to testify. On Jan. 18, a judge ordered Winter to testify about her source who allegedly gave her information about the contents of Holmes' notebook sent to his psychiatrist, The Associated Press reported.

Homes has been charged for allegedly killing 12 and injuring 58 others at an Aurora movie theater on July 20. His defense team claims information about the notebook Winter published in a July 25 article on FoxNews.com?compromises Holmes' right to a fair trial, the AP reported.

In her account, Winter's source describes the notebook as having details about how Holmes was going to kill people and including images of "gun-wielding stick figures blowing away other stick figures."

In Friday's court filing, Holmes' attorneys request that the hearing be moved to April 1, citing "a complex and difficult process" in obtaining an out-of-state subpoena.

"...Based on current attempts to communicate with Fox News, Jana Winter's employer, the defense anticipates ongoing resistance in efforts to compel Ms. Winter's attendance and testimony," the filing stated.

Just two days before the Fox News article was published, Arapahoe County, Colo., District Judge William Sylvester had issued a gag order on those involved with the case to avoid prejudice against Holmes, according to the AP. The leaked notebook contents could be a violation of that gag order.

Though journalists under Colorado law are protected by reporter's privilege, under certain circumstances they can be ordered to reveal their sources. In this case, the judge will decide if the interests of Holmes' defense outweigh the interests of the journalist, the AP reported.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Court ruling on Obama's appointments a victory: Corker

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Republican U.S. senator on Sunday said a federal appeals court ruling against President Barack Obama's recess appointments to the National Labor Relations Board could invalidate rulings made by the agency.

A federal appeals court ruled on Friday that Obama violated the U.S. Constitution when he used recess appointments in January 2012 and installed three nominees to the NLRB.

Senator Robert Corker said in an interview on "Fox News Sunday" that the ruling indicated the administration had overreached, characterizing the appointments as abusive.

"It was a huge victory for anybody who believes in balance of power and the Constitution," Corker said. "This ruling is very far-reaching and actually knocks down decades of action by presidents, as far as common practice goes."

The labor board nominees were facing stiff Republican opposition and Obama side-stepped Senate confirmations hearings by installing them with recess appointments. Republicans said he had undercut the Senate's power to confirm nominees because although most of its members were out of town, the chamber had not formally adjourned.

Friday's ruling also could limit presidential power to push through federal nominees and may be used to undo more decisions by the NLRB, and regulations by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The consumer agency's director, Richard Cordray, was named at the same time as the board members.

Corker was asked if the ruling invalidates more than 300 rulings made by the NLRB in the past year and those regulations established under Cordray at the CFPB and said it "could well do it."

"In each case, someone might have to challenge the rulings to make them invalid," he said.

The White House has said the court decision will not impact Cordray.

The No. 2 Senate Democrat, Dick Durbin, defended the White House's use of recess appointments due to fierce Republican resistance.

"In its frustration, this administration said, we were elected to govern," Durbin said "Fox News Sunday." "Whether it's a National Labor Relations Board or whatever, they wanted to put people in place to govern."

Mainstreaming impact investing: Overcoming the hurdles ...

Blog_tree_money_300x200Asset management is in a state of flux. Trillions of dollars are expected to change hands over the next number of years as baby boomers begin to transfer their wealth to the next generation ? a generation that has grown up in a culture that calls on business to play a more active role in building a better society. ?In this context, the field of ?impact investing? has taken center stage as a means to enable and empower for-profit business models to address society?s toughest challenges.

But what exactly is impact investing, and isn?t all investing intended to create impact? First coined by the Monitor Group in 2009, impact investing is an emerging industry that places capital in businesses (or entrepreneurs) that intentionally seek to create social or environmental value. This could be an investment in a dairy products producer in Nairobi that works to increase the efficiency and production levels of small-scale farmers in rural Kenya. Or, it could be an investment in an innovative program that seeks to reduce youth recidivism (repeat criminal offense) in New York City. The common thread among impact investments is the notion of intent ? when the investor intentionally seeks to create social or environmental value, the investment is an impact investment.

In certain instances, the rate of return on these investments is less than market rates; in other instances, they are substantially more. During a private session at the World Economic Forum?s Annual Meeting many examples of impact investments with identified social objectives which also generated significantly higher annualized return than comparable investments were identified and discussed.

Given the potential of generating both above market returns and a positive impact on society, invested capital in impact investing is forecasted to swell to between $400 billion and $1 trillion by 20201. Despite this burgeoning potential, many challenges arise when institutional and mainstream investors consider making impact investments.? Thus Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited and the Deloitte US Firms (together, ?Deloitte?) worked with the World Economic Forum to convene world leaders in the space ? including multibillion dollar hedge funds, private equity firms, sovereign wealth funds, asset managers, financial services companies, foundations, and social enterprises ? in Davos, Switzerland. The group of approximately 50 participants spent over two hours brainstorming and debating on how to accelerate the flow of capital towards impact investing. The following are a few highlights:

  • Impact investing should not (and cannot) replace philanthropy. There are many instances in which for-profit business models will not offer the best approach to addressing societal challenges.
  • Impact investing will likely be driven by foundations, family offices, and high-net-worth individuals and followed by institutional investors once track records are established and financial returns proven. Mutual funds and hedge funds face significant constraints when approaching impact investing and may not participate for many years (i.e. most impact companies are not publically listed).
  • Many challenges still remain before mainstream investors will move beyond one-off impact investments, including: early-stage ecosystem, small average deal size, fit within asset allocation framework, and measurement of the dual bottom line. Deloitte will work with the World Economic Forum to identify innovative solutions that address these challenges.

Although the workshop in Davos was a significant step forward to pique the interest of mainstream investors, much work still needs to be done in order to accelerate the flow of capital towards social impact organizations. The Deloitte team is now working with the World Economic Forum to craft a strategy for institutional investors to approach impact investing in new and creative ways. What started here at Davos will continue over the coming months!

Healthy Exercise and Fitness: Water-Based Exercise - Health Benefits

Swimming is the fourth most popular sports activity in the United States and a good way to get regular aerobic physical activity . Just two and a half hours per week of aerobic physical activity, such as swimming, bicycling, or running can decrease the risk of chronic illnesses. This can also lead to improved health for people with diabetes and heart disease. Swimmers have about half the risk of death compared with inactive people. People report enjoying water-based exercise more than exercising on land. They can also exercise longer in water than on land without increased effort or joint or muscle pain.

Water-Based Exercise and Chronic Illness

Water-based exercise can help people with chronic diseases. For people with arthritis, it improves use of affected joints without worsening symptoms. People with rheumatoid arthritis have more health improvements after participating in hydrotherapy than with other activities. Water-based exercise also improves the use of affected joints and decreases pain from osteoarthritis.

Water-Based Exercise and Mental Health

Water-based exercise improves mental health. Swimming can improve mood in both men and women. For people with fibromyalgia, it can decrease anxiety and exercise therapy in warm water can decrease depression and improve mood. Water-based exercise can improve the health of mothers and their unborn children and has a positive effect on the mothers? mental health. Parents of children with developmental disabilities find that recreational activities, such as swimming, improve family connections.

Water-Based Exercise and Older Adults

Water-based exercise can benefit older adults by improving the quality of life and decreasing disability. It also improves or maintains the bone health of post-menopausal women.

?A Good Choice

Exercising in water offers many physical and mental health benefits and is a good choice for people who want to be more active. When in the water, remember to protect yourself and others from illness and injury by practicing healthy and safe swimming behaviors.

Despite falls, Wagner edges Gold for 2nd US title

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Flawed, but still first.

Ashley Wagner became the first woman since Michelle Kwan in 2005 to win back-to-back titles in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, managing to hold off up-and-comer Gracie Gold despite three major mistakes Saturday night.

Wagner was subdued as she waited for her marks, surely thinking she'd blown her chance to repeat. When her score was announced and she saw she was still in first, a look of shock crossed her face.

Wagner finished with 188.84 points, about two ahead of Gold. Gold won the free skate ? posting the second-highest score ever at the U.S. meet, no less. But the 17-year-old had too much ground to make up after a dismal performance Thursday night in the short program left her in ninth place, more than 13 points behind Wagner.

Earlier Saturday, Olympic silver medalists and 2011 world champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White won their fifth straight dance title, matching a U.S. record. Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir won the pairs title.

There is something about defending the title that brings out the worst in the American women. Since 1990, Kwan is the only other woman to win consecutive titles (granted, she did win eight straight). Six women have won the last seven crowns, and the reigning champion has almost always had a total meltdown. Rachael Flatt is the only defending champ who even managed to stay on the podium the next year.

Wagner, though, seems to be made of different stuff. She's been rock solid since moving to California to train with John Nicks in the summer of 2011. She won the U.S. title last year, had the best finish by an American at worlds since 2007 and won the silver medal last month in the Grand Prix final.

And she sure looked loose as she came out from the dressing rooms, clapping along with the crowd to Agnes Zawadzki's "Rhapsody in Blue" music. Her opening triple flip-double toe loop-double toe combination was gorgeous, drawing oohs and aahs from the crowd. She also did a triple loop in and out of a spread eagle ? incredibly difficult.

But she didn't have her usual fire, almost as if she was skating not to lose rather than skating to win. And then came the falls. She was off-balance in the air on the lutz, and couldn't right herself in time to save it. With the triple loop only seconds later, she didn't have time to regroup. She pulled herself together only to two-foot her last jump, the triple flip.

At 21, Wagner is a far more complete skater than Gold, and that's what made the difference. Skating to "Samson and Delilah," Wagner told a story while Gold just skated and jumped.

With blonde good looks and a made-for-the Olympics name, Gold has all the makings of that "next big thing" the United States has been craving. That she can skate only fueled the hype, and some were ready to put her on the Sochi medals stand after she won the U.S. junior title last year and finished second in the junior world championships.

But she's been wildly inconsistent this year, winning the silver medal at Cup of Russia after falling apart at Skate Canada. After botching her short program Thursday, she needed a dazzling performance just to have a chance at one of the spots on the world championships team. She came through, posting a 132.49 that was the second-highest score for a free skate at nationals. Sasha Cohen scored 134.03 in 2006, the year she won her only U.S. title.

"I stopped focusing on what was around me ? the crowd, the screaming, the other skaters, the pressure, the expectations. I let it all go," Gold said. "I just pictured myself at my rink in Chicago and even the practices here ? how I would skate if I was practicing. Just the feel of the knees, the feel of the ice, one thing at a time.

"I didn't get over my head with thoughts or expectations. I just went out there and skated like I know how to skate."

Gold's jumps are fabulous, easily the best of the entire field. Maybe the whole world. They're done with power, and her combinations are so smooth she looks like a stone skipping across the water. She did seven triples, and even Kim Yu-na would be impressed with her triple lutz-triple toe loop combination.

But skating is both sport and art, and Gold is going to have to add some substance between the jumps if she wants the prize to match her name. Her footwork was basic and most of her spins were adequate, and she didn't display that passion that makes a good program great.

Hubble finds appearances can be deceptive: Looking at the stars in NGC 411

Jan. 26, 2013 ? Globular clusters are roughly spherical collections of extremely old stars, and around 150 of them are scattered around our galaxy. Hubble is one of the best telescopes for studying these, as its extremely high resolution lets astronomers see individual stars, even in the crowded core. The clusters all look very similar, and in Hubble's images it can be quite hard to tell them apart -- and they all look much like NGC 411, pictured in a new image.

And yet appearances can be deceptive: NGC 411 is in fact not a globular cluster, and its stars are not old. It isn't even in the Milky Way. NGC 411 is classified as an open cluster located in the Small Magellanic Cloud, a small sister galaxy near our own. Less tightly bound than a globular cluster, the stars in open clusters tend to drift apart over time as they age, whereas globulars have survived for well over 10 billion years of galactic history. NGC 411 is a relative youngster -- not much more than a tenth of this age. Far from being a relic of the early years of the universe, the stars in NGC 411 are in fact a fraction of the age of the sun.

The stars in NGC 411 are all roughly the same age, having formed at one time from one cloud of gas. But they are not all the same size. Hubble's image shows a wide range of colors and brightness in the cluster's stars; these tell astronomers many facts about the stars, including their mass, temperature and evolutionary phase. Blue stars, for instance, have higher surface temperatures than red ones.

The image is a composite produced from ultraviolet, visible and infrared observations made by Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3. This filter set lets the telescope "see" colors slightly further beyond red and the violet ends of the spectrum.

Cows fed flaxseed produce more nutritious dairy products

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Dairy cows that are fed flaxseed produce more nutritious milk, according to a new study by Oregon State University.

Their milk contained more omega-3 fatty acids and less saturated fat, the study found. Diets high in saturated fat can increase cholesterol and cause heart disease, while those rich in omega-3 and other polyunsaturated fatty acids may reduce the risk of heart disease, studies have shown.

Traditional cattle feed mixtures of corn, grains, alfalfa hay and grass silage result in dairy products with low concentrations of omega-3 and other polyunsaturated fats, according to Gerd Bobe, the lead scientist on the study, which has been published online in the Journal of Dairy Science.

Ten pregnant cows at OSU's dairy were fed different amounts of flaxseed -- up to seven percent of their daily diet. Researchers attempted to pinpoint the amount of flaxseed that would maximize the amount of omega-3 in milk and dairy products without negatively affecting their production and texture.

"We were looking for a sweet spot," said Bobe, an expert in human and animal nutrition. "Too much of a good thing can be bad, especially when trying to maintain consistency with dairy products."

Collaborators in OSU's food science and technology department assisted in turning milk into butter and fresh cheese, which were then tested for texture and nutritional composition.

The study found that feeding cows up to six pounds of extruded flaxseed improved the fat profile without negatively affecting the production and texture of the milk and other dairy products. Extrusion presses raw ground flaxseed into pellets with heat.

At six pounds per day, saturated fatty acids in whole milk fat dropped 18 percent, poly-unsaturated fatty acids increased 82 percent, and omega-3 levels rose 70 percent compared to feeding no flaxseed. Similar improvements were observed in butter and cheese.

Still, saturated fat accounted for more than half of the fatty acids in the dairy products while the increase in polyunsaturated fats compromised no more than nearly nine percent of the total.

Researchers also noted that the refrigerated butter was softer and less adhesive thanks to fewer saturated fatty acids. Also, the cows produced the same amount of milk while eating flaxseed.

Although flaxseed costs more than traditional cattle feeds, Bobe hopes that it still could be an affordable feed supplement for cows because products enriched with omega-3 can sell for a premium at the grocery store.

"Many consumers already show a willingness to pay extra for value-added foods, like omega-3 enriched milk," he said.

One thing is for sure, he said: Dairy farmers will have no trouble convincing cows to eat flaxseed.

"They loved it. They ate it like candy," he said.

Britain's economy shrinks anew, flirts with 'triple dip' - InterAksyon.com

InterAksyon.com
The online news portal of TV5

The country's gross domestic product fell 0.3 percent in the fourth quarter, the Office for National Statistics said on Friday, a sharper fall than the 0.1 percent decline forecast by analysts.

The news is a blow for Britain's Conservative-led government, which a day earlier defended its austerity program against criticism from the International Monetary Fund. It needs solid growth to meet its budget targets, keep a triple-A debt rating and bolster its chances of winning a 2015 election.

Sterling fell to its lowest in 13-1/2 months against the euro and hit a five-month low against the dollar in response to the data. The euro was also buoyed by a stronger-than-expected German Ifo sentiment survey.

"This is a very disappointing outturn," said Philip Shaw, economist at Investec in London. "Clearly now the talk will focus on whether we are in a triple dip recession. Certainly the news is unwanted."

Britain's economy is now 3.3 percent smaller than its peak in Q1 2008, having recovered only about half the output lost during the financial crisis - a worse performance than most other major economies.

The country slipped back into recession in the last three months of 2011, and only emerged from it in the third quarter of 2012, after a boost from the London Olympics.

After a bout of inclement snowy weather in January - which is likely to have hit spending and output - the risk is that the economy will continue to shrink in the first three months of this year, technically pushing it into a rare and unwelcome "triple dip" recession.

Britain's biggest department store group, John Lewis JLP.UL, said earlier on Friday that snow was responsible for its sales growth stalling in the latest week.

Politically incendiary

In economic terms, the picture remains one of stagnation over the past year. But politically, the latest dip in national output is more incendiary.

"Stagnation is going to be the theme for the next couple of quarters or so. This obviously brings Osborne's strategy into sharp relief and also the (Bank of England) strategy of maintaining or not sanctioning further monetary policy action," said Rob Wood at Berenberg Bank. "The Bank of England were forecasting a return to some growth in Q1 and that is likely to be disappointed."

Finance minister George Osborne stuck fast to his austerity plan on Thursday, rejecting suggestions from the International Monetary Fund's chief economist that he should consider slowing his deficit reduction plan.

Prime Minister David Cameron this week staked his political future on offering a referendum on Britain's place in the European Union. But it is Osborne's gamble that austerity will deliver strong growth before a 2015 election that will be crucial in determining his Conservative party's chance of winning.

After the figures were released, the Treasury conceded that Britain still faced a "very difficult economic situation".

"While the economy is healing, it is still a difficult road," it said in a statement.

Britain's chief central banker Mervyn King expects no more than a "gentle recovery" this year, while this week the IMF cut its 2013 forecast for British economic growth to 1.0 percent from 1.1 percent predicted in October.

However, economists and business groups warn that even such lackluster growth could be derailed by a hit to firms' and consumers' confidence from talk of a triple-dip recession.

That prospect will add to pressure on the ruling coalition of Conservatives and Liberal Democrats to loosen its deficit-cutting drive and bolster the economy as George Osborne prepares his 2013 budget, due in March.

The biggest driver for the fourth-quarter fall in GDP was a 10.2 percent drop in mining and quarrying output, the biggest since records began in 1997, driven by disruption from extended maintenance affecting North Sea oil and gas fields.

This knocked 0.18 percent off GDP, while slightly smaller amounts of damage were done by falls in factory output and in the 'government and other services' category, where the Olympics had boosted sports and recreation services in the third quarter.

Friday's figures showed output in the service sector -- which makes up more than three quarters of GDP -- was flat in the fourth quarter. Industrial output was 1.8 percent lower.

John Paul Rollert: 5 Principles for Moral Leadership

Accomplished leaders are like master craftsmen: their first principles are best practices, the felt wisdom of experience and reflection.

Take Benjamin Franklin. In his Autobiography, he describes 13 precepts for self-improvement he coined as a young man. They include Resolution ("Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolve"), Industry, ("Lose no time; be always employ'd in something useful; cut off all unnecessary actions"), and Order ("Let all your things have their places; let each part of your business have its time").

When the penniless printer from Philadelphia became one of the leading men in America, his admirers understood the enormous benefit his example could provide. "[Y]ou yourself framed a plan by which you became considerable," observed one, who implored Franklin to share it in hopes of "aiding all happiness, both public and domestic."

For inspiration, I assign Franklin's Autobiography to students in my business ethics class at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Then I challenge them to derive principles of their own with an eye toward strong moral leadership. With their permission, I wanted to share five favorites from my fall class.

1. Put a Face on It

Unlike Franklin's experience, many of our work relationships will involve people we will never meet. Dan, an IT professional, makes the obvious but often overlooked point that it is "easy to engage in unethical or immoral behavior when you don't have to see the person whom you are affecting." Accordingly, he always tries to put a face with a name, finding photos of the people he interacts with on LinkedIn or other online directories. "Associating a face with the interactions reminds me that my actions affect a real person," he says, "not just some faceless name in an email address line."

2. Manage by Listening Rather Than Telling

Unusually precocious, Franklin knew the awkward status of being junior in age but senior in position. Drawing on her own experience working for an industrial supplier, Lindsay observes that a promising associate is often placed in a leadership role "before she may be ready," with the result that she finds herself "fighting an uphill battle to do well and gain the respect of those around her with more tenure and experience." Accordingly, Lindsay contends that one must establish a professional dynamic of mutual respect. "I am only successful if the people I manage have my back and respect me," she says. "I am nothing if I do not respect and support the work that they do day in and day out.

3. Be Flexible, Not Dogmatic

Franklin's rejection of a rigid approach to problem solving spoke to Drew, a corporate trust analyst. "Businesses leaders need to be flexible and not dogmatic about their beliefs and intellectual frameworks," he says. Reflecting on Alan Greenspan's leadership in the years before the financial crisis, he faults the former Fed Chair not for failing to anticipate the crisis, but for believing that such an event could never occur. "Greenspan relied too heavily on frameworks," he says, "and not enough on doing everything in his power to rationally understand what was going on and make adjustments to his policies as needed." For Drew, strict adherence to dogma not only binds a leader's hands, it can blind him to problems his framework won't admit.

4. Follow Published Rules of Conduct

Franklin wrote his precepts in a memorandum book he carried with him wherever he went. The aim was to remind him of the behavior he aspired to -- and to shame him whenever he failed to live up to it. An executive at a Fortune 50 company, Megan observes that, while the "Code of Conduct" is a mainstay of the modern office, "many people disregard these published rules." Such a tendency not only undermines the rules, when managers flout them, it reinforces a spirit of lawlessness. A fish rots from the head down. If rules are important enough to be written down, they are important enough to be followed -- by everyone.

5. Respect the Bottom Line, but Don't Worship It

"[A]fter getting the first hundred Pound," Franklin observed in the Autobiography, "it is more easy to get the second." Yet, as Patrick, a student with experience working in renewable energy, observes, the additional gain can sometimes come at too high a cost. "I don't believe that the pursuit of profit on its face is immoral," he says, but "I do believe that a relentless focus on profit often leads to immoral behavior." The same may be said for any single-minded focus that excludes all other goods. For leaders, a sense of perspective and an ability to step back are essential to balancing moral integrity with corporate mission. At the same time, Patrick notes, the emergence of companies that have double or triple bottom lines of profit, social impact, and sustainability "indicates that certain businesses either share this principle or have very slick PR teams."

Benjamin Franklin wasn't above a little "slick PR" -- how else to explain a book where one presents himself as a paragon of self-improvement? -- but he believed that the appearance of integrity would inevitably be undone without the reality in support of it. The principles described above are no doubt demanding, but so is any standard of leadership worth the trouble of writing down.

Getting Started in Rock Climbing | Denali

This article is a great introduction to the sport of rock climbing for those of us teetering with the idea of taking it on as a new activity. Have a quick read and get educated before making the plunge.- Tony

You?ve seen the pictures, heard the stories, watched the tantalizing footage in a movie or TV show. But then you look around and nobody seems to know any climbers, and you haven?t a clue about where to begin.

Years ago, rock climbers started out as hikers and mountain climbers. Technical rock climbing was a natural extension for them. Today, lots of rock climbers are coming from indoor climbing gyms. These are steep-terrain athletes, not necessarily seasoned outdoors people. Many of these climbers don?t even venture outside. They find the indoor world rich enough to satisfy them without going further afield.

To an outsider, the culture of climbers might seem elitist and closed; and if not, it?s at least mysterious. There are all those gadgets, all those terms. Lots of climbers tell stories about being intimidated, not by the climbing itself, but by the culture and the technology. All it takes is one day out on the rock and, I assure you, any sense of intimidation disappears. Mystery turns to understanding.

Most important for any beginner is to find others who share the interest. If there is an indoor climbing gym, you are all set. Simply visit, get a lesson or two, and don?t be shy. Everyone in the place was once in your position, and most climbers will be enthusiastic about bringing another into the fold.

If you live in an area with some natural cliffs, there will probably be an outdoor gear store whose clerks are in the know. Ask them every question you can think of: Who are the local instructors? Are there any climbing clubs? Is there a network of climbers? Check the board for posted notes from other climbers seeking partners.

I won?t recommend getting instruction from just any friendly stranger. Even though many of us did just that, some of us are lucky to have survived the apprenticeship. The American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) will give you an extensive listing of certified guides and accredited programs. So will the two main publications, Climbing and Rock and Ice. All have Web pages.

Start-up costs? Here are some approximations:

Shoes: $125
Harness: $50
Chalk and chalkbag: $20
Belay device and locking carabiner: $25
Helmet: $75

Do not buy a rope or any anchoring gear until you know what you are doing. If your guide or new partners can?t supply these items, then they too are rookies.

Great white shark hanging out near NC coast again

HATTERAS, N.C. (AP) ? A 16-foot great white shark named Mary Lee is among those who like calling North Carolina home.

The Ocearch Shark Tracker has kept track of the 3,500-pound Mary Lee since she was tagged in September off the coast of Cape Cod, Mass. On Wednesday, she was off the Outer Banks.

So far, she has traveled up and down the East Coast, including Florida, where she came within 200 yards of Jacksonville Beach a couple of weeks ago. In December, she entered the mouth of the Cape Fear River in southeastern North Carolina before traveling south.

Businessman and adventure show producer Chris Fisher says tens of thousands of people are following Mary Lee's travels online.

Inklings : In Rec Basketball, Competition Meets Camaraderie

Home > Sports > In Rec Basketball, Competition Meets Camaraderie

Kelsey Shockey ?14 & Alex Spector ?13, Video Editor & Business Manager

Basketball.

When the word comes to mind, the immediate thought is of Lebron James flying through the air for an electrifying slam dunk, Magic Johnson lighting up the court with his jaw-dropping, flashy passes, Shaquille O?Neal physically dominating opposing defenders, or just the name Michael Jordan.

On a more local level, the thought of Staples Wreckers boys? and girls? varsity basketball teams playing pretty much every Tuesday and Friday night during the winter comes to mind.

While all of the Staples teams are exciting and fun to watch, the sport that really captures the essence of the winter months is Westport Parks and Recreation?s Youth Basketball, better known as ?Rec Basketball?.

Some students, such as Emily Centinaro ?15, don?t know too much about Rec Basketball.

?The only time I heard about it was on the Good Morning Show,? Centinaro said.

But Joey Schulman ?14 claims, ?You?d have to be living under a rock to not know anything about Rec.?

Rec Basketball has become a phenomenon here at Staples High School for all four grade levels. Students anticipate their upcoming season for the entire Fall and then, throughout the Winter, Rec Basketball becomes priority number one for many. But why does everybody who plays Rec adore it so much?

Jack Roof ?13 is an Administrator of the 2012-2013 Westport Recreational Basketball Upperclassmen group on Facebook.

expressed his reasons for loving Rec: ?Rec isn?t really basketball,? Roof said. ?It?s a bunch of goofballs who care more about looking good then playing good. Nevertheless, each and every season is one hell of a ride.?

Essentially, Rec Basketball gives kids who simply do not have the time, commitment level, or skill to play basketball at the Varsity level a chance to play a sport they love.

?We play because balling is in our DNA; we were born to play,? Lance Lonergan ?13 said when expressing his feelings on Rec Basketball. Grayson Weir ?14 echoed Lonergan?s sentiments, saying, ?As the great Rasheed Wallace once said, ?Ball don?t lie because ball is life.??

While the players? love for Basketball is obvious, there is no love lost between competitors in this league. ?The best part about Rec is the buildup?and then almost everybody is awful. Especially Lance [Lonergan],? Quinn Mendelson ?13 said. ?Lance is absolutely awful.? Lonergan responded by saying, ?Quinn is irrelevant. A non-factor. Un-athletic scrub. I?m embarrassed to even step foot on the same court.? This is typical of the type of ?smack-talk? that happens on the floor, off the floor, or in the notorious Facebook group.

The smack talk is just part of the sport, and it is one of the major differences between Rec and real, organized varsity basketball. This type of talk is essential, but on any other Staples sports team, it would not be tolerated nearly as much.

Alex Addessi ?13 is a starter on the Staples Varsity team this season, but he spent his first two years of high school playing at the Rec level. Addessi illustrates the major differences between Rec and varsity.

?I like playing for the Staples team because the competition is better and I get to play basketball all week,? Addessi said. ?I do miss playing against kids I know from our school though.?

While Addessi claims that the competition is better, it is widely believed in Rec basketball circles that a Rec All-Star team could give Staples a good game.

?The best part of Rec is knowing that our All-Star team could beat the Staples team any day of the week,? Lonergan said. This is one of the beliefs that ties in with the overall ?cockiness? of Rec legends.

One other major difference that Addessi pointed out is the league Facebook groups.

?The group makes it so that people have an organized place to trash talk each other and get information about what time games are,? Roof said.

?The group makes up the league hype,? said Lonergan.

The group serves multiple purposes and is certainly one of the staples of Rec basketball.

Rec Basketball matters as much, if not more than, Staples Wreckers basketball games to many students. It?s a fun, relaxed, and different way of playing basketball in which everyone can find something to enjoy.

For Patrick Connolly ?13, a player who took a year off from Rec during his junior year, finds joy in watching the comedic struggles of Alec Yass.

?Watching [teammate] Alec Yass go 1-27 from three-point range is hilarious,? Connolly said.

Lonergan put it best: ?Rec gives everyone the chance to play and have a good time, even for kids like Alec Yass,? he said. ?Rec is elite.?
