The Sims 3: Generations (PC) | Journal of Technology and Economic ...

The Sims games have traditionally received two types of add-ons: ?stuff? packs that give fans new items like decor and apparel, and full expansions that add brand new gameplay elements. The Sims 3: Generations is an awkward middle child, granting you more than just hairstyles and new chairs but none of the inventiveness found in previous expansions like World Adventures and Ambitions. This addition is a pleasant extension of what The Sims 3 already does?not a game changer?and series addicts will undoubtedly enjoy how well Generations captures the essence of life?s individual milestones. Children get tree houses and playground equipment; teens learn to drive and go to prom; adults have midlife crises; and grumpy oldsters shoo away annoying kids with their canes. These enhancements are subtly integrated into the main game, but they don?t have the overall impact of previous expansions. And that?s this expansion?s real problem: lack of impact. It?s nice to have new playthings, but at almost the cost of a whole new game, even the most dedicated devotees can probably do without these toys.

6320426Toddlers are like cats: you can leave them alone for hours without supervision. In fact, they enjoy it.None

As you can guess from its title, Generations deepens and broadens your sims? various stages of life by adding mechanics suited to their age. It begins in childhood, with one of the expansion?s most charming and surreal additions: the imaginary friend. This semicreepy stuffed wonder morphs from plush toy into a combination of best friend and personal assistant. Watching your child?s purple Martian mutant saunter about with an exaggerated bounce is as charming and silly a sight as any in the series, and you only see him when you are directly controlling your child. Want a snack? Send your pal to grab you one. Want help with making the beds and cleaning the toilet? Ask your invisible friend to help with your chores. Heck, you can even turn him into a controllable sim if you mess around at the chemistry table often enough. You make potions here, one of which will make your virtual Pinocchio a real boy. Well, almost, anyway. You can craft other potions at the table too, such as mood enhancers and the like, though potions aren?t exactly new; the Makin? Magic expansion for the original game included a similar mechanic.

As you move through the years, you also unlock new features. Children don?t just get living plushies: They can play on seesaws and in tree houses or use any of the other playground equipment added to the Buy mode. They can also pull pranks, at home or elsewhere. Your cackling kid may sneak up to his parents? laptop and set it up to scare the next sim that uses it or plant a whoopee cushion on the sofa. The sim that falls victim to the prank is disgusted by the sound, and temporarily suffers from a negative moodlet. If your kid prefers milder forms of fun, you can always dress him or her up as a dinosaur using the new costume chest. Here, as in other ways, Generations encapsulates an important truth of youth: Children dressed as fairy princesses and astronauts are adorable. Teens are more known for angst than adorableness, so perhaps you?d like to prank the school and release frogs from the science lab; it?s a pity you only read of the results in in-game text rather than witness the hysterical results. Your teens can also go to prom, but this is an option sadly underutilized. Perhaps your prom was a slow-dancing delight, or perhaps it was a public display of romantic awkwardness. Either way, you can?t relive those moments in The Sims 3: Generations. Your teen and his or her date simply disappear into the building, and you get periodic updates in the corner of your screen.

Hide Review Next page

Luckily, other elements are more interactive. You can throw bachelor parties now for engaged sims, and if things get wild and crazy, why not pull out a video camera? You activate cameras from your personal inventory and ?tape? events from a first-person view. It?s actually pretty amusing to step into the shoes of an individual sim in this manner because you suddenly feel like you are actually eavesdropping on your neighbors? conversations rather than having your virtual doppelganger do your dirty work for you. Later, you can watch your home videos on television, though reliving these moments isn?t nearly as fun as capturing them in the first place. Perhaps you aren?t so much into the partying aspect of The Sims 3. Luckily, there?s at least a little something new to mess with for most types of players. Builders and buyers will appreciate spiral staircases and the new wedding arch; family-oriented folks will like how you can reprimand your kids when they?re particular naughty; and if you?re into woohoo, beware: You now have to worry about your romantic reputation.

These changes are all fine in and of themselves, but they don?t bring anything significant to the table; they simply broaden existing features. Previous expansions added game-changing mechanics like celebrity fame, puzzle-solving adventures, and interactive careers. Granted, Generations adds a new profession?Day Care?but attending to a roomful of toddlers that need constant changing and socializing isn?t as fun as busting ghosts or fighting fires. (Though to be fair, Day Care is not a career, but a profession, which is an important distinction to Sims 3 players.) But Generations mostly stretches out what already existed and offers nothing exciting enough to lure you back to the game if you?ve moved on from it. Its final impact is that of a ?stuff pack? with added social features rather than a true expansion. Generations is in part aimed at the ?Sims 3 as sharing experience? crowd, as evidenced by the new social networking integration, which allows you to upload key moments to the Sims 3 website and share them on your Facebook wall. Now, the virtual life you live in The Sims 3 has more bearing on your actual life than ever before. But even voracious Sims lovers might wonder whether $39.99 is too much to ask for a product that feels less like an expansion and more like a collection of gameplay odds and ends.

Those odds and ends are agreeable at least, though they aren?t all that?s new in The Sims 3: Generations. You could run into bugs you?ve never seen before. You might receive notice that your teen has made a new friend at school: himself. Or your normally endearing child might temporarily morph into a hideous long-armed freak, with her head in the middle of her abdomen. Glitches aside, Generations adds entertaining moments to a franchise that turns routine duties, like taking showers and tossing salads, into compelling delights, but these new moments are too infrequent and unexceptional to justify the high price tag.

ARMADILLO is an astute exploration of the culture of war. Director Janus Metz follows Danish soldiers fighting the Taliban in the Helmand province of southern Afghanistan with sophisticated visual artistry rarely achieved under such raw conditions. Building his film around the characters within the platoon, Metz allows us to witness how war transforms the different personalities, and the group, approaching his subjects with an intimacy equal to that of fiction. The active military base "Armadillo" houses a mix of 170 Danish and British soldiers in the ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) who are responsible for providing security to the surrounding area and eliminating the Taliban insurgency. Metz follows his subjects through an entire tour of duty, creating an unforgettable portrait of the reality of military life on the front lines. Documenting both the boredom and horror of warfare, Metz shows us the soldiers playing video games and laughing at pornography, struggling to communicate with disillusioned civilians, and killing a group of Taliban soldiers found hiding in a trench. The film avoids judgments for or against the war, and instead shows the soldiers struggling to maintain their humanity in a world filled with violence.-- (c) New Yorker

The movie's strength and audacity comes from the Danish soldiers, who confront civilians with wariness or bluntness, exalt in their victories and hesitantly exhibit fear in each others' company.

There's little new in "Armadillo."

A mesmerizing, beautiful and terrifying documentary that can stand among the greatest war movies ever made.

You emerge shaken and bothered, which may sound like a reason not to see the movie. It is actually the opposite.

While much of Armadillo echoes last year's Restrepo, the unprecedented access of director Janus Metz and cameraman Lars Skree reveals the alternating waves of frontline tedium and terror with fresh immediacy.

Aficionados of the first-person format will be salivating over the footage captured by Metz and his cinematographer Lars Skree.

Armadillo is a harsh, honest document about men at war - any war.

...a mostly new twist to consider the Allies who support the U.S. effort - if it is heartbreaking for American families to send their youth to war in Iraq and Afghanistan, imagine how it must feel for the Danes.

A must-see for those not afraid of seeing and hearing a true statement of the horrors of war.

War doc sets itself apart with skilled storytelling

Metz captures and weaves together striking images with great craft. The actual hell of an actual war has never been so beautifully rendered.

You may be sick of war films about Afghanistan by now, but Armadillo's boldly objective take on the situation shouldn't be missed.

The film doesn't sit in judgment, but it does broaden our understanding of what's happening behind enemy lines - and behind the headlines.

Made with the visual polish and dramatic intensity of a fictional feature, Armadillo is a significant addition to the documentaries on the war on terror.

What's interesting about Armadillo's subjects is how differently they and their American counterparts perceive the war...

A chilling documentary about Danish soldiers fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan during their tour of duty.

Facile documentaries like this one, no matter how sincere their intentions may be, don't help the case.

Embeds itself directly into the soldiers' daily lives and reveals all the tedium, cultural hurdles and confusion they struggle with.

'Armadillo'. An alarming, eye opening look into a Danish platoon in Afghanistan, leaving me extremely conflicted about the motivations of soldiers.

"For you its a movie, for them its a reality"Documentary filmmaker Janus Metz and cameraman Lars Skree spent six months following the lives of young soldiers situated less than a kilometer away from Taliban positions.REVIEW As the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have dragged on they have produced an increasing number of provocative war documentaries that have shattered many of the myths about the black-and-white absolutes of war that have often been sold to those on the home front. Armadillo is one of the best films yet produced about the reality of life during a war. The film follows a Danish unit assigned to Helmand Provence in Afghanistan during a 6 months tour. The filmmakers hold nothing back in this intimate portrait of soldiers at war. They present a picture of young men who seem to lose their humanity in the brutal circumstances of war. The visceral picture of combat is harrowing and the filmmakers should be commended for what they have captured on film.A film like Armadillo makes us ask ourselves if this war is worth the human cost that we are paying and what it is doing to the soldiers that we are sending to fight these wars. The film has caused considerable controversy in Denmark.

Google facing wide-ranging US antitrust probe: WSJ (AFP)

WASHINGTON (AFP) ? The US Federal Trade Commission is poised to open a formal antitrust probe into whether Internet search giant Google has abused its dominance on the Web, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

The newspaper, citing "people familiar with the matter," said the FTC is preparing to serve Google with civil subpoenas "signaling the start of a wide-ranging, formal antitrust investigation."

The Journal said the five-member commission will send Google the formal demands for information "within days" and other companies were likely to receive requests for information about their dealings with Google.

The FTC declined to comment on the report and there was no immediate response to a request for comment from the Mountain View, California-based Google.

Google, which controls around 65 percent of the lucrative US Internet search market, has been the target of numerous antitrust investigations by the FTC and the US Department of Justice in recent years.

But the Journal said the FTC's probe "is the most serious to date" in the United States because it will examine "fundamental issues relating to Google's core search advertising business."

The newspaper said the FTC probe is expected to take a year or more to unfold and "won't necessarily lead to any federal allegations of wrongdoing against the company."

Google makes most of its money from search-related advertising.

According to digital marketing firm eMarketer, Google's share of net US search advertising revenue will grow 38.9 percent this year to $10.92 billion, giving Google a 75.9 percent share of overall US search revenue.

The Journal said the probe will look at whether Google "unfairly channels users to its own growing network of services at the expense of rivals."

European Union competition watchdogs opened an investigation into similar allegations in November and the US state of Texas is also conducting a probe into whether Google abused its power in the online search advertising arena.

Two US senators, Herb Kohl of Wisconsin and Michael Lee of Utah, wrote to Google earlier this month asking that chief executive Larry Page or executive chairman Eric Schmidt attend a hearing in Washington on competition issues in Internet search.

Google proposed that chief legal officer David Drummond testify instead but the senators said in a letter to Google obtained by AFP that they would "strongly prefer" for Page or Schmidt attend the hearing.

"A hearing on this important topic would be incomplete without the direct perspective and views from one of Google's top two executives," they said.

The Senate panel could issue a subpoena compelling Page or Schmidt to testify but the senators said they would "very much prefer to work this out by agreement rather than needing to resort to more formal procedures."

Google has faced increasing scrutiny from US and European regulators as it has grown over the years from a scrappy startup into an Internet powerhouse.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the Justice Department is currently conducting an antitrust review of Google's recent $400 million acquisition of Internet advertising company Admeld.

In April, US Justice Department approved Google's entry into the online travel sector with its $700 million purchase of flight data firm ITA Software but it insisted on a number of concessions from Google.

Several online travel sites, including Expedia, Kayak and Travelocity, had sought to block the Google-ITA deal, claiming it would give Google too much control over the lucrative online travel market and lead to higher prices.

In late March, the FTC reached a settlement with Google over Google Buzz, the social networking tool rolled out last year which spawned a slew of privacy complaints.

Under the settlement announced by the US regulator, Google is required to implement a comprehensive privacy program and will be subject to independent privacy audits every two years for the next 20 years.

Also in March, a US judge dealt a setback to Google's plans for a vast digital library and online bookstore, rejecting a copyright settlement hammered out by the Internet giant with authors and publishers.

In 2008, Google abandoned a plan to forge a joint search advertising partnership with Yahoo!, citing a desire to avert a "protracted legal battle" with US regulators.

Top 10 Things to Do With a Dollar

At times, many of us feel like we may not have enough money to go out and do something fun to entertain ourselves. However, most people have a dollar lying around somewhere, whether it be between the couch cushions or on the floor of your car. Here are some fun, entertaining things you can do with a dollar:

  1. Have a movie night! Go to your local RedBox or Blockbuster Express (usually at the front of your local grocery store) and rent a movie for a dollar. The rental is usually good until the next night and for only a dollar, you can't beat it! Pick up some movie treats and pop some popcorn and you'll have the perfect movie night at home!

  2. Take a trip to the dollar store and go wild! This is a fun activity for kids because you can give them each a dollar or two and tell them to get whatever they want! They'll feel grown up and have a blast shopping with their very own money!

  3. Go to your local McDonalds and enjoy something delicious off of the dollar menu - a hamburger, soft serve sundae, fries or drink! You'll feel like you indulged your inner sweet tooth and you only spent a buck!

  4. Trade your dollar in for 100 pennies and go to a fountain with your friends/significant other/kids and make 100 wishes! While it seems a little corny, you'll get to enjoy some time spent outside and fun while doing it! Plus, out of 100 wishes one is bound to come true!

  5. Take a walk downtown and when the homeless mother with her child asks you for spare change hand her a dollar and feel like you've accomplished something special today.

  6. Buy a lottery ticket! If you win, it will be the best dollar you've ever spent! If you lose, you're out a buck - big deal! Cross your fingers and go for it!

  7. Buy a loaf of day-old bakery bread from your local grocery store and take a walk to the park or lake to feed the ducks or birds. Sometimes it's the little things that make the best memories!

  8. Buy a glass lemonade from the neighborhood kids' lemonade stand and let them keep the change. It will make their day!

  9. Go to a used bookstore and buy a book you've been wanting to read. Used book stores are the perfect place to spend an afternoon thumbing through books... old and new.

  10. Go to your local pet store and buy a few goldfish. Put them in water in a vase you have at home and voila... you have a new pet!

3 men trapped in southeastern Kentucky mine OK (AP)

MIDDLESBORO, Ky. ? Three men trapped all day Monday in a coal mine flooded by overnight rains have moved to dry ground under the earth while awaiting rescue and were regularly communicating with officials at the surface, authorities said.

An entrance to the southeastern Kentucky mine collapsed at about 6:40 a.m. and water began pouring in from a swollen drainage ditch.

Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet spokesman Dick Brown said the soonest the men could be brought out was early Monday evening. He told The Associated Press that water was being pumped out and that "we're just waiting for it to get low enough so they can wade out."

Families gathered in Middlesboro near the site where they were being briefed on the conditions of Parnell Witherspoon, Doug Warren and Russell Asher. Also, a state-trained mine rescue team was on hand at the mine along the Tennessee and Virginia borders.

The men aren't hurt and have been communicating regularly with rescuers, said Mine Safety and Health Administration spokeswoman Amy Louviere (LOO'-vee-air). The mine is owned by Richmond, Va.-based James River Coal and operated by Bell County Coal.

One member of each miner's family was taken to the site to talk to the men via underground phone, Louviere said.

Crews were pumping 1,100 gallons of water per minute from the Jellico No. 1 mine and an additional power center was being set up to run more pumps, Louviere said. By early evening, the water had dropped 18 to 24 inches.

Brown said the miners would likely be examined at a hospital before being allowed to go home.

A ditch above the entrance collapsed when a piece of the mine's roof fell early morning and water rushed in, officials said.

Bell County Coal started operations there Jan. 23, 2009, according to MSHA records.

The mine, one of four Bell County Coal has listed with MSHA, has been cited 32 times during inspections that started in April, according to records. The company has been cited a total of 82 times since 2009 for a variety of reasons, from inadequate roof supports to accumulating dust to issues with the electrical system. The company has been assessed fines from $100 to as nearly $4,000, but is contesting nearly three-quarters of the citations.

Tony Oppegard, a Lexington attorney who specializes in mine safety, said those trapped in a mine with water coming in would normally head for the highest point. If James River Coal put a refuge chamber in the mine, that would give the miners a place to go with enough provisions for 72 hours, Oppegard said.

"There's been a great increase in mine rescue teams since the disasters of the last several years," Oppegard said.

Kentucky is the lone state where mine inspectors also comprise the rescue squads, meaning the people searching for those trapped should already be familiar with the terrain, Oppegard said.

James River Coal has an in-house rescue squad, whose members should be familiar with the mine, Oppegard said.

Freed former Tijuana mayor says no hard feelings

TIJUANA, Mexico ? The eccentric former mayor of Tijuana said Monday that he had no hard feelings for the Mexican officials who launched a pre-dawn raid on his home and imprisoned him for 10 days on charges that were eventually dismissed.

Jorge Hank Rhon was jovial and relaxed in his first public comments since he was released for lack of evidence, entertaining reporters' questions for an hour in the lobby of his flagship casino before shaking hands with supporters and driving off behind the wheel of his Maybach sedan.

"I think one who gets angry loses, so I don't get angry," said Hank Rhon, a gambling magnate from a politically powerful family. "What happened is in the past."

The administration of Mexican President Felipe Calderon has faced withering criticism since the army's June 4 raid on Hank Rhon's sprawling complex in central Tijuana, which includes a casino, soccer stadium, greyhound racetrack, large private zoo and his home.

Hank Rhon, 55, was released from custody twice in one day last week, first on weapons charges and then on suspicion of masterminding the murder of his son's former girlfriend. Skeptics said the raid was a strike against his Institutional Revolutionary Party ahead of next year's presidential election.

Hank Rhon denied the raid was a political ploy but refused to try to explain the government's actions.

"I'm very practical. When I have a stomach ache, I cure it. I don't walk around thinking about what I ate or why my stomach hurts," he said. "Fortunately, I have my freedom again."

Hank Rhon confirmed that the U.S. State Department revoked his visa but said he didn't know why.

"I didn't ask a lot of questions," he said.

U.S. authorities have long suspected Hank Rhon of links to laundering illegal drug proceeds, but no accusations have been documented.

Hank Rhon was unemotional when asked to recall his feelings when soldiers stormed his bedroom after a long night of entertaining guests. He said he felt embarrassed wearing shorts and that his first thought was to grab a pair of pants.

"I'm not like Adonnis," he said, wearing an open-collar suit and seated next to a live mascot for the Xoloitzcuintles, the Mexican hairless dogs for which his soccer team is named.

When asked how the episode changed him, he deadpanned that he lost more than 17 pounds in captivity but has gained nearly half of that back since his release.

Hank Rhon, the father of 19 children with various women, was Tijuana's mayor from 2004 to 2007 after amassing a fortune from his Caliente gambling empire. He has fed his reputation of eccentricity by boasting of getting energy from drinking a tequila laced with bear bile, scorpions, and rattlesnakes and steeped with the penises of tigers, lions and dogs.

He said Monday that he would stay in politics and did nothing to quell speculation that he would run for governor of Baja California state 2013 after a failed bid in 2007.

"I don't know any politician who doesn't want to govern his state," he said.

Asked by another reporter about the governor's race, he said, "I like more the suggestion of the woman who was kind enough to say she wants me to be president of the world."

This Day in Buffalo Sports History: Caught in a draft

June 21, 1997 -- Draft day is usually an interesting time in the National Hockey League, sometimes in hindsight more than at the time. The 1997 NHL Entry Draft was held on this day in Pittsburgh. Buffalo had the 21st pick in the first round, which meant it had to do some sitting and waiting. The first five players turned out to be good ones. Joe Thornton went to the Bruins first overall. Unions warned over strike 'trap'

Ed BallsMr Balls accused ministers of "goading" the unions
Related Stories

Shadow chancellor Ed Balls has urged the unions not to fall into a government "trap" by striking over plans to reform public sector pensions.

He said Chancellor George Osborne was trying to provoke industrial action so he could blame them for the weak economic recovery.

Writing in the Sunday Mirror, Mr Balls said ministers were wrong to announce changes before talks with unions ended.

Business Secretary Vince Cable has said there will be negotiation.

Union leaders are threatening the biggest wave of strikes since 1926, after the government unveiled proposals for public sector employees to work longer and pay more for less generous entitlements in retirement.

In his article, Mr Balls writes: "From David Cameron down, ministers are saying to the trade unions: 'Bring it on.' As in the 1980s, they seem to be spoiling for a fight, goading the unions and trying to provoke strikes."

“ He wants them to think that going on strike is the only option and the best way to win the argument”

Ed Balls

He said "everyone agrees public sector pensions need to be reviewed as people live longer" and pension rules "have to change" for younger workers.

But he added "the government should be getting round the table and talking changes through".

He said the economy was "flat-lining" and Mr Osborne was hoping there would be walk-outs.

"He knows he's losing the economic argument on the deficit and jobs and needs to change course. But instead he's trying to pick a fight about pensions, provoke strikes and persuade the public to blame the stalling economy on the unions."

Mr Balls added: "That's why trade union leaders must avoid George Osborne's trap. He wants them to think that going on strike is the only option and the best way to win the argument."

BBC political correspondent Vicki Young said the Labour leadership had until now refused to be drawn on whether the unions were adopting appropriate tactics in their fight with the government.

Public sector workers are already facing heavy job cuts and a pay freeze.

Why are public sector workers striking? Q&A: Retirement rules and you Guide to public sector pension schemes

The government proposals would see employees - bar members of the armed forces, police and fire service - receive their occupational pension at the same time as the state pension in future.

Many can currently receive a full pension at 60 but the state pension age is due to rise to 66 for both men and women by April 2020.

Ministers also want to move the public sector scheme from a final salary system to benefits based on career-average earnings. However, lower paid workers would not have their pension contributions increased

Speaking on Saturday, Mr Cable said: "The government wants to negotiate over this and our belief is that most trade unionists want to negotiate over this as well.

"It's a very big, complex, difficult issue. But there's got to be reform otherwise the burden falls on taxpayers and future generations. We have got to do something about it."

Dr Mary Boustead, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) has called for negotiations to start afresh.

But a strike by the ATL and the National Union of Teachers is expected to disrupt thousands of schools in England and Wales on 30 June.

They will walk out on the same day as PCS union members, who are mainly from the civil service and government agencies.

Unison, which represents 1.3 million people working for local authorities, the NHS, colleges and the police, has not yet balloted its members on industrial action. Its leader Dave Prentis said unions were prepared for "sustained and indefinite" strikes.

Workers Compensation Charlotte | Personal Finance, Wealth Building ...

When a person has been hurt while they were working the employer is responsible for the medical bills. The workers compensation Charlotte attorney makes sure that the employer holds their end of the deal.

It was declared that all the site where employees offer their services have to have safety measures. This requirement is seen as an effective way of reducing the rate at which accidents occur when people are working.

The employers are required by law to guarantee the safety of their staff by making the sites accident proof. In case an employee is injured while at work, the government eventually has to finance them. It is for this reason that they have put up strict rules and regulations for the workplace. If they visit a site and notice that the safety of the employees is not assured then the company is heavily fined for its negligence.

Some of the employees claim the company doctors do not have their interest at heart. In such situations the injured person can only seek the opinion of another doctor after thirty days have passed.

Attorneys advise the injured party to seek the services of an independent doctor since the company doctor can declare them healed even before they have fully recovered. Some of the physicians even threaten the employees with penalties if they claim to be still recuperating. They use the excuse that the patient is trying to cheat their way from reporting back to duty. People who feel that the company doctor is not sympathetic to their plight are usually advised to visit another doctor for consultations.

Their lawyer should help with the paperwork that they need to compile. The attorney also knows how to speed up the processing of the claim. In case the claim does not have a doctor?s report then it will take a while before it is processed. There are times when the claim is rejected, the lawyer has to find a way of making things right.

Most of the people who file claims with the workers compensation Charlotte agency are not genuine. This is the reason as to why they treat such claims with a lot of suspicion. If the injured person has filed all their documents properly, then they have little to worry about. The attorney should be in a position to make sure that their client gets the compensation that they deserve.

Time for Three Joins North Carolina Symphony to Close Summerfest ...

They?re back! The North Carolina Symphony welcomes self-described ?classically trained garage band? Time for Three to the Triangle to close out the 2011 edition of the Rex Healthcare Summerfest Series. The concert takes place at Koka Booth Amphitheatre on Saturday, July 16, at 7:30 p.m. Children 12 and under are free.

Led by Resident Conductor William Henry Curry, the performance showcases the category-shattering trio?s unique blend of jazz, blues, country and bluegrass, including the group?s original takes on favorites like ?Shenandoah,? ?Orange Blossom Special? and Leonard Cohen?s ?Hallelujah.?

?We sort of rock out up there; we?re pretty loose,? Time for Three bassist Ranaan Meyer told the Wall Street Journal in 2009. ?Based on the instruments that we?re playing, people aren?t used to that.?

Time for Three gained instant attention when founding members Meyer and violin Zachary De Pue provided an impromptu jam session while workers fixed a power outage during a Philadelphia Orchestra concert in July 2003. Joined by violin Nicolas Kendall, Time for Three has developed a dedicated following through their limitless enthusiasm and wide-ranging sound.

To date, the group has performed more than two hundred engagements as diverse as its music, from featured guest soloists with the Philadelphia Orchestra to opening for k.d. lang at Philadelphia?s Kimmel Center. They wowed Raleigh crowds during the North Carolina Symphony?s New Year?s Eve concert in 2008.

?Some might not categorize it as classical, with its broad elements of jazz, country, bluegrass, zydeco and Latin dance forms, but these performances should appeal to every taste because of their intensity and precision,? wrote the Raleigh News & Observer?s Roy C. Dicks last year in a review of the band?s most recent CD. Several tracks from the album will be performed live on July 16.

The evening and the Rex Healthcare Summerfest Series will be capped with a spectacular fireworks finale.

Also part of the festivities is the popular Instrument Zoo, which offers kids the opportunity to try out the orchestra?s instruments for themselves, and the last chance to win the Whole Foods Market of Cary Picnic of the Week contest. The Symphony?s roaming judges will award the weekend?s best picnickers with a $100 gift basket from Whole Foods. Two honorable mentions recipients will take home $20 Whole Foods gift cards. Visit www.ncsymphony.org/picnic to view previous winners.

General admission lawn seating to ?Time for Three? is $30 in advance, $35 at the door. Covered table seating is also available for $35 in advance, $40 at the door. Children 12 and under are admitted free to all Rex Healthcare Summerfest Series concerts.

Koka Booth Amphitheatre is located at 8003 Regency Parkway, just off the intersection of US-1 and US-64/Tryon Road, in Cary. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. Food and beverages, including wine and beer, are allowed on the grounds.

Signs Of Breast Cancer: What are the signs of Breast Cancer?

Question by jilldays: What are the signs of Breast Cancer?
What are the signs of breast cancer?

Best answer:

Answer by lo_mcg
Jilldays, a quick glance at your Q&A suggests to me that you?re young, possibly school age ? forgive me if I?m wrong.

I don?t know why you?re asking this question, but you need to know that the chances of breast cancer in a teenager are close to zero. It?s mainly a disease of ageing ? 80% of those diagnosed are over 50 (the average age for diagnosis is 60) and only around 5% are under 40.

Fewer than 0.1% of all those diagnosed with breast cancer are under 30, and it?s almost unheard of in under 20s.

The American Cancer Society and other cancer organisations recommend that women begin breast self-examination at the age of 20.

At the age I?m assuming you are, your breasts are still growing and developing; every day on this board there are questions from teenage girls who are terrified they have breast cancer because of perfectly normal hormonal changes.

Of course it may be that you are asking on behalf of someone older; early breast cancer usually has no symptoms at all. Symptoms of possible breast cancer are:

change in size ? one breast may have become noticeably larger or lower

nipple change ? if it becomes inverted (pulled in) or changes its position or shape

rash ? on or around the nipple

discharge ? from one or both nipples

puckering or dimpling ? around nipple

swelling ? in your armpit or around your collarbone (from lymph nodes)

lump or thickening ? that feels different from the rest of the breast tissue ? BUT remember that most breast lumps are not cancerous

These are changes that an adult woman should be looking out for and reporting. In a teenager any changes to the breast are almost certainly hormonal

Retail chiefs gather to discuss food deserts with Chicago mayor

CHICAGO ? The Windy City?s problem with food deserts is getting attention from the city?s mayor and some of the country?s top retailers, according to published reports.

ABC reported Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel held a summit with CEOs from Walgreens, Walmart, Aldi, Roundy?s and the companies that operate the Jewel and Dominick's chains. During the summit, Emanuel offered incentives for the companies to build stores in the food deserts, which are low-income neighborhoods that lack large supermarkets, thus making residents unable to obtain fresh fruits and vegetables.

Walgreens already has built several stores in Chicago that offer expanded fresh food options as a way of addressing the food desert problem, including at least one store that has 40% of its retail space dedicated to food. Walmart also has built Walmart Express stores in Chicago food-desert neighborhoods, including West Englewood.

What's more, Walgreens also has sought to expand its fresh-food store concept. CEO Greg Wasson said at a shareholders meeting earlier this year that the company may expand its fresh food centers to 400 or more stores over the next several years, and the company announced in May that it would test-market stores with healthy food options at 30 locations in San Francisco.

Sony Music Unlimited Now Available For Android

"Now that continuous waves of attacks against Sony's servers have slowed down a bit (it's been over a week since the last hack), the company found some strength to regroup and released an Android client for its popular cloud music service Music Unlimited, powered by Qriocity."

I guess this Music Unlimited service has been around for a while and only recently became available for our Android devices. The service pretty much seems to be Pandora with a little Amazon Cloud Player thrown in for a monthly fee. Not exactly a compelling business model with all of the other options out there these days. Though one feature you get with Sony's service that you can't get with others is free username and password sharing...

Nepal (CD/ MNN) -- Compass Direct reports some startling developments in Nepal that could impact the future of Gospel work there. Voice of the Martyrs Canada also confirms the reports which indicate that there's a change coming in the criminal code. Nepal abolished Hinduism as the state religion in 2006 but is now working on giving the criminal code added "bite." Changes now forbid a person of one faith to "convert a person or abet him to change his religion." According to Compass, Article 160 of the proposed code also says no one will be allowed to do anything or behave in any way that could cause a person from a caste, community or creed to lose faith in his/her traditional religion or convert to a different religion. The standard clauses of "offering inducements or without inducement" and preaching "a different religion or faith with any other intent" are also included in the prohibitions. Evangelists convicted under the code could face a five-year jail sentence as well as a heavy fine (US$685). If the offender is a foreigner, deportation would come within seven days of completing the sentence. The bill still needs to be approved by the House and also make it through that body's Legislative Committee. However, if the committee approves the bill, it would return to parliament and then be sent on to the president. There's been a hitch. Last weekend, the Nepalese government failed to complete a new constitution providing for religious freedom due to a protracted battle for political power. Pray for all those in authority in Nepal. Ask God to bring about genuine religious freedom in this nation. Pray for the church and that it will remain faithful, growing in strength and in number.

International (MNN) -- The United Nations (UN) World Refugee Day is a global observance observed on June 20 each year. This year marks its 60th anniversary. The day is set aside to highlight the challenges and successes of those who are forced to flee their homeland under threat of persecution, conflict and violence. Participants are encouraged to take action such as encouraging legislators to support human rights, signing active petitions, and more engagement with refugee communities. However, the focus is on Africa, specifically on the Darfur situation in Sudan. There's not much being done to raise the awareness of the various humanitarian and religious crises throughout Asia. The Karen crisis in Burma, according to Vision Beyond Borders, is at genocide levels and largely ignored. VBB's Abigail Zimmer was just in Burma helping to set up a medical clinic in a camp. Because the team was made up of foreigners, they couldn't go into the camps. "We were in one place all day where people came to us, but there was a lot of worry about the people traveling around, being harassed on their way to and from the clinics." The conditions inside the camps are dismal. Zimmer says, "Looking at the people that were coming in, there's absolutely no dental hygiene and very minimal nutrition offered." Many of the ethnic minorities in Burma are Christian in a predominantly-Buddhist society and are oppressed and persecuted for their faith. The United Nations has registered roughly 93,000 residents who've fled Burma as refugees. Burma's junta has chased the Karen over the border, and Thailand has been kicking them back. The Thai government has been trying to close the refugee camps since March. VBB is trying to meet the needs of those who have found themselves in a "no man's land" between Burma and Thailand. "We're taking teams over as frequently as we can. We're also sending a 40-foot container of clothes and toys and things for the refugees. We just got back from a short-term medical clinic trip where we just went over and treated over 500 patients." With so few speaking on their behalf, believers have felt abandoned. A cup of cold water in Jesus' name goes a long way toward restoring the hope of the Gospel. Zimmer explains, "The people are so strong and filled with such a love for people. They were so excited, and you could see a relief and a peace that people still cared and wanted to love on them." This year's theme for the World Refugee Day is "Real People, Real Needs." Aside from helping to provide for the physical needs of the Karen, Zimmer urges Christians to "pray for their strength and protection. Also just pray for a change and a shift in their government leadership that they'll soften and turn to help the people instead of run them out." Click here to respond.

India (MNN) -- India's church has been growing exponentially over the last few years, but there are still some regions oblivious to the Gospel. Assam state in Northeastern India is one of seven states that used to be united. The landlocked state is in the center of the other six and happens to be the center of Hinduism and Islam for the region as well. "Assam, a state with a population of about 32 million, is the most staunchly Hindu and Muslim region of Northeast India," explains Mawii Pudaite with Bibles for the World. "65% are Hindus, 30.9% are Muslims, [and] only 3.7% are Christians." Minority Christians are often ostracized in the religiously-polarized state. "Operation World states that ?Assam remains the major spiritual challenge in Northeast India. After two centuries of Christian work, professing Christians are a small and marginalized minority,'" says Pudaite. The people in the region are in desperate need of the Gospel, and Bibles for the World hopes to bring it to them. "There are more than 500,000 families whose names and addresses are available for us to send God's Word to," explains Pudaite. Now it's a matter of getting the Bible in the hands of those families. The ministry is off to a good start. Many believers in Assam are eager to bring the Truth to their neighbors. A tribal Christian doctor was so moved to do so that he provided seed-money of 52,000 rupees (about $1,160) for Bibles for the World to start printing and distributing Bibles as soon as possible. Local Christians are also prepared to do follow-up work once Bibles are distributed. Much is in place, and Bibles for the World hopes to begin distribution by the end of the year. In order to reach this goal, however, more funding is necessary. It only costs $2.25 to print and distribute a New Testament to Hindu and Muslim homes in Assam. A gift of $22.50 will cover the cost of 10 Bibles, a gift of $225 will cover the cost of Bibles for 100 families, and so on. Help cover these costs at bftw.org. The impact that these New Testaments could have on the state could be astronomical. 500,000 Bibles to 500,000 families means far more than half a million people will be reached with the Word of God. Now, the most important thing to ensure the Truth sinks into hearts is prayer. "[Pray that] God will prepare their hearts to receive His Word."

USA (MNN) -- In the United States, the third Sunday in June is Father's Day. It's a day set aside to honor our fathers. For Christians, it's a time to honor the spiritual legacy our dads have left with us. This year, Medical Teams International wants you not only to honor your dad, but to make it possible for dads around the world to be a dad. President of Medical Teams International Bas Vanderzalm says his dad survived World War II in the Netherlands. "At the end of the war, he was in between two opposing armies, and there was no food and no shelter. American humanitarian aid workers dropped food and blankets to my dad, and it made an enormous difference." Vanderzalm is asking you to make a similar difference in the lives of people in Japan who are devastated by the March earthquake and resulting tsunami. "In Japan, right now, we're working with local churches to distribute pots and pans and blankets to people who have lost everything and who are trying to rebuild their lives." It's not just about helping physically. "I trust that when we help support that effort, it will transform not only the lives of the people, but their hearts too, and that they will see what we are doing there--the love of Christ." Vanderzalm says he has the blanket that was given to his father in his time of need. He says it's a reminder to him that everyone can be victims. "They are people like us. They are fathers, mothers and children. And they need our help. I think they will always remember what we do for them in the name of Christ for them, just as my dad always remembered." God uses these events to open hearts to the Good News. "We're not just looking at the physical needs that people have, but we realize that so many disasters touch people's hearts and that there are deep spiritual needs, as well. We try whenever we can to support local churches and what they're doing in the area because we know that what people really need is hope. And that only comes in faith in Christ." Vanderzalm is encouraging you to support the work of Medical Teams in your father's name this Father's Day. You can make a difference for a father in need both physically and spiritually. Moldova (MNN) -- In February of 2011, the World Health Organization dubbed Moldova the world's leading nation in per-person alcohol consumption. Reports show that the average Moldovan consumes 18.22 liters of alcohol annually--three times more than the average of 6.1 liters. Other former Soviet nations on the list of heavy alcohol consumption included Russia, Ukraine, Estonia and Belarus. In Moldova, there is a special provision in the government budget for treatment of alcohol. But that government provision is not enough, and churches are stepping forward to help alcohol abusers as well. Slavic Gospel Association reports that its affiliated evangelical churches are deeply grieved at the level of alcohol abuse in their communities. SGA's Eric Mock recently painted a picture for the MNN audience of just how devastating this abuse can be for families--especially children in Ukraine. And it is certainly no better in Moldova. In response to the crisis, many SGA churches have begun Bible-based drug and alcohol rehabilitation ministries, which SGA partners help support when possible. These programs not only provide care for overcoming the addiction, but they provide the life-changing Truth of the Gospel message as well. As these programs continue to reach the countless alcohol abusers in Moldova, pray that many would find true freedom in Christ. Only 3.7% of the eastern European nation is evangelical Christian, according to the Joshua Project. Pray that this ministry might reach the hearts of many of the 97% who have yet to truly grasp the Gospel. To give to or learn more about SGA, visit sga.org.

Nepal Literacy program (Photos courtesy of H.E.L.P.) Nepal (MNN) -- When people launch community development programs in the Third World, they're usually trying to correct obvious physical needs. That was true for Tim and Lani Ackerman, who launched the Health Environmental and Learning Program (H.E.L.P.) in 1999. Using the model of Jesus' ministry to meet both the physical and spiritual needs of the poor, they decided to equip the national church and help them in developing their own community, while at the same time minister to people of all faiths. Nepal is the world's 15th illiterate country. There are schools, but Ackerman says, "The school buildings are there, but many days, going by school buildings on school days: nobody was in the school." Christians and women are on the lowest end of the social scale, which prevents access to basic things like food and water. Not only are they poor, they are also despised. The lack of education robs them of opportunities. "They're unable to function in society as far as going to the market and buying and selling, reading basic signs, and of course, reading the Bible, which is the most basic of all." Implementing programs that involve training in agriculture, husbandry and health can improve their circumstances. However, whether these programs are "sustainable" will depend entirely on whether or not the population can read. "The reason we need this basis is because the rest of our training does involve some reading and some understanding of concepts If they can't do that, we really can't educate them." Of their literacy students, Ackerman estimates 1200 are women. Once they get through the yearlong course, HELP can add to the basics with other community development material of which the Gospel is a key component. Roughly half of their students are Buddhist or Hindu at the beginning, and the other half are Christians. "By the end of our one year," Ackerman explains, "most of the women that go through our program end up at a second or third grade reading level." Their students' gratitude is best described this way: "When one lady had finished one of our literacy classes, she said, ?I was blind, but now I can see.'" Best of all, Ackerman explains, "We found out that this is an excellent church-planting tool, and that's where the discipleship comes in. [For] the people that do stay in there, it becomes a pastored church." Most of the classes start with roughly half of the students as Buddhists or Hindus. The other half are Christians. Ackerman says, "By the end of the class, many of those Buddhists and Hindus have given their life to Christ." The program is small, but growing. In Nepal, "We have two national missionaries that run these literacy programs. They're the ones that interview the literacy facilitators; they will train these guys, and then they will oversee that." With all of the demands on their team's time, Ackerman is asking believers to pray "for health, safety and travel. [Pray also] for all those that are involved, that they would have that very solid evangelical heart to use this as an outreach and a church-planting tool to change the hearts and the minds of those in Nepal." There's more here.

International (MNN) -- We all have stories to tell. Stories of joy, of pain, of birth, of death. Stories make up history, even the Bible. One ministry wants to hear your stories. Specifically those encounters you've had with poverty. Bright Hope International helps the poorest of the poor--those living on less than a dollar a day--in 10 countries around the world. The ministry has archives-full of stories about God's work with the poor. But now, they want to hear from you. "There are so many great stories out there of people that have been engaged with the extreme poor, that we want to invite people to come share those," says president Craig Dyer. The Share Your Story Campaign invites you to reflect on your own stories, and think of ministry in new ways as you listen to others. As Bright Hope compiles the stories of Christ followers around the globe, they will start an online archive for people to engage with and enjoy. "We want to gather as many stories as possible from as many different places as possible and say, ?Hey, here's what God's doing. Here's the lives that are changed.' We can be challenged by it, be emotionally moved by it and celebrate, and maybe even cry as we read some of people's stories of meeting widows and orphans and people in need." Perhaps a residual effect of the online forum to read and share stories could also be unsaved lives changed by the power of God's work. Dyer says, "I think people that don't share our faith in the Lord Jesus are attracted by our desire to help people in need." Hearing about what God's doing in the world and through his followers could be pivotal for some. As you share your stories of ways you've interacted with the world's most poor, be it across country lines through financial gifts or face to face on a mission trip, you will get to experience kingdom fellowship firsthand. So, Dyer urges, "Come, share your story--it can be a couple sentences, it could be a couple paragraphs--and just be part of God's work among the poorest of the poor, and let's encourage each other and strengthen what God is doing there." Share your story now at brighthope.org. As you think about your experience and listen to others', you may feel compelled to be a part of God's work with the most poor. If you would like to help financially, now's the time. Bright Hope currently has a matching grant option of up to $30,000 through July. Every dollar you give will be matched with another dollar. If you want to turn your $35 into $75 to bring hope, sustainability and the Gospel to the poor, give with Bright Hope at brighthope.org.

Burkina Faso (MNN) -- Unrest appears to be dying down since Burkina Faso replaced the governors of all 13 of its regions last week. The landlocked African nation has been facing various upheavals since February, when youth protested to the controversial death of a peer. Since then protests over economic downturn and industrial woes have helped add to the death toll. Dean Yoder with Christian World Outreach is in Burkina Faso now. "The day before I arrived, 19 people were killed and 60 arrested because of continued unrest," reports Yoder, who says damage throughout the country has been significant. Unrest has been great, and you can pray that the revamped government may help ease some qualms for the nation's sake. However, Yoder says their ministry has been able to make it out unscathed. "Even though there's been destruction, there's been looting, and damage to stores, and burned marketplaces, we have not experienced any difficulty or anyone trying to attack our facilities," explains Yoder. CWO has no fear that the new governor appointments will change their safety status either. In fact, their right on schedule with a building project for their ministry. CWO works with girls in Burkina Faso, who are notoriously overlooked. Young females seldom have the opportunity to get any sort of education or vocational training in the nation, so the ministry has stepped in to help change their fate. A vocational school is being built currently for the girls to learn skills like sewing, cooking, hygiene, cosmetology and agriculture. The girls are given an education and the skills necessary to produce income-a necessity essential especially for keeping them away from trades like prostitution if anything happens to the men in their families. "This is allowing them to bring dignity to themselves, feel self-worth as well as hear the Gospel and accept Jesus," Yoder adds. The vocational school is halfway finished, and the girls are able to meet in the completed portion. Despite the significant violence in Burkina Faso, the building project is scheduled to be done within the next two months. At this point, Yoder's biggest prayer is for continued safety. "We need prayer that God would continue to protect us, protect our staff, protect the girls at the school, and protect the school itself." Pray that as a result of this safety, girls would be able to learn about trades and about Christ in peace.

Algeria (MNN/ICC) -- In late May, the president of the Protestant Church Association in Algeria (EPA) received the following notice: "I, Mr. Ben Amar Salma, the High Commissioner of the police in Bjaia, have informed Mr. Mustapha Krim, the President of the EPA... to close down all worship places; the places which are used now and the places which are under construction... The authorities will make sure that the order will be obeyed, otherwise severe consequences and punishments will be applied. This notification demanded the permanent closure of the seven Protestant churches in the Bjaia province, located 200 kilometers east of the capital Algiers. The threat came as no surprise to the EPA. Since 2006, Protestants have lived at the mercy of a strict law known as Ordinance 06-03, which has prevented them from worshipping freely or legally. The ordinance regulates the worship of non-Muslims by requiring churches to obtain government permission to hold services. Despite repeated efforts by the EPA to obtain this permission, the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Religious Affairs have failed to create a clear procedure to register churches and it often takes years before a registration is approved. "We were told we are not in compliance with the 2006 decree, but we have tried to comply, EPA President Mustapha Krim told the Algerian daily La Dpche de Kabylie. "We have spoken with the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Interior Ministry. We have gone round-and-round with them for years, but nothing gets done." Similar notifications, like the one received in Bjaia, have been issued to EPA churches before. "The same thing occurred in Tizi Ouzou when several churches were ordered to close under threats that legal action would be taken against the leaders," a Protestant church leader in Tizi Ouzou told ICC. "Our church also received this order in 2008, but because we resisted, the church continues to this day." In a more recent incident, a church in the village of Makouda, near Tizi Ouzou, was given 48 hours to shut its doors on April 23. The pastor presented documents to the local police department that proved his affiliation with the EPA, but the police commissioner said the documents were not sufficient proof to operate the church. Still, the church continues to meet each week. While EPA churches continue to hold services despite being warned otherwise, they do not take the threat on the Bjaia churches lightly. "According to this decree, if one does not obey the instructions, the authorities are threatening to do the enforcement," said Krim. "Apparently they want us to disappear from the map." Nonetheless, when Sunday morning services rolled around on May 29, the notification was not enough to persuade churches in Bjaia to shut their doors. "Here we are Lord to praise Thy name!" sang a hundred worshippers before Pastor Nordin stepped to the pulpit to read Psalm 23, reminding the congregation of God's faithfulness even in hardship. "We did not understand the decision of the [governor]" a church member told La Dpche de Kabylie. "We worship out of conviction. We are not afraid, because we did nothing wrong. We were never forced to choose Jesus, but we did so voluntarily. Whatever the circumstances, we will continue to say: we are here to praise your name Lord." At the end of the day, authorities had not interfered and services proceeded as normal. Further indication that the situation was improving soon followed when Minister of Interior Dahou Ould Kablia stated at a June 2 press conference in Algiers that the Protestant Church of Bjaia will be "allowed to continue their activities until they receive the necessary authorization," Algerian news agency Tout sur l'Algrie reported. While Christians in Bjaia remain unsure about whether or not they will be allowed to freely worship in the future, one thing is certain - they will not close quietly. "Pastors and church officials... opted for resistance by continuing to worship instead of obeying the order to close their doors," said a representative of the EPA who has been closely involved in the case. "They continued to meet and celebrate their religion despite the threats. If the authorities decide to close places of worship, Christians will gather in homes or cell group meeting in the open air, which is already being done in some communities. But, we believe the situation will improve."
