John Wall Thinks He?s The NBA?s Best Point Guard

In yesterday?s interview with The Dan Patrick Show, guest hosted by Sports Illustrated?s Chris Mannix, John Wall had the opportunity to elaborate on a variety of topics. ?Everything from his recently signed contract to his restaurant tipping habits were discussed, but one question in particular stood out among the others. When asked who he thought the league?s best point guard was, Wall wasn?t shy in his response. ?I rank myself the best,? said Wall. ?Yeah, I rank myself the best.?

While Wall?s claim is certainly up for discussion, one can?t deny that he has the necessary confidence needed to lead a struggling franchise back to the playoffs.

'2 Guns' shoots to No. 1 at weekend box office

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? "2 Guns" is No. 1 at the weekend box office.

The Universal action film starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg pulled the trigger to capture the top spot with $27.4 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

"2 Guns" is based on a graphic novel of the same name and features Washington as a DEA agent and Wahlberg as a Naval Intelligence officer who must team up for an undercover operation involving drug traffickers and the CIA.

Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal, said "2 Guns" opened at the studio's expectations and attributed the film's success to Icelandic director Baltasar Kormakur and the first-time pairing of Washington and Wahlberg.

"It was super casting," she said. "There was remarkable chemistry. The two of them work so well together. You see it on screen. Baltasar really gave them the energy to be able to do what they did in this film."

Fox's Japan-set superhero flick "The Wolverine" starring Hugh Jackman as the clawed warrior scratched out the No. 2 spot with $21.7 million in its second weekend, bringing the Marvel icon's total domestic haul to $95 million.

"The Smurfs 2" launched in the No. 3 position with $18.2 million. While Sony's kid-friendly computer-generated sequel based on the blue-hued cartoon franchise debuted below expectations in North America, "Smurfs 2" earned $52.5 million in 43 international markets.

"It is one of those films that seems to resonate on every continent," said Rory Bruer, Sony's president of worldwide distribution. "We have about 36 big territories to go, including China. They love the blue ones."

The Warner Bros. haunted house tale "The Conjuring" crossed the $100 million mark at No. 4 after exorcising $13.7 million in its third weekend.

Elsewhere at the box office, Sundance Film Festival favorite "The Spectacular Now" starring Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley earned $190,000 in four theaters in its debut weekend, while "The Canyons" made just $16,000 at two theaters, though "Canyons" distributor IFC Films said the erotic thriller starring Lindsay Lohan is performing strongly through video-on-demand services.

Other smaller films continued to perform solidly at the box office, including Sundance winner "Fruitvale Station" with $2.7 million in 1,086 theaters and director Woody Allen's "Blue Jasmine" with $2 million in 50 theaters.

"Summer is not just about blockbusters," said Paul Dergarabedian of box-office tracker Hollywood.com. "It's also about Woody Allen. It's about specialized films that challenge the audience ? or are just different from the traditional, cookie-cutter, summer-style movie."

Overall ticket sales this weekend were up more than 15 percent over the same weekend last summer, Dergarabedian said.

Human Cells Make Mice Smarter

Astrocyte nerve cell

Image: FROM ?FOREBRAIN ENGRAFTMENT BY HUMAN GLIAL PROGENITOR CELLS ENHANCES SYNAPTIC PLASTICITY AND LEARNING IN ADULT MICE,? BY XIAONING HAN ET AL., in CELL STEM CELL, VOL. 12. NO. 3; MARCH 7, 2013. WITH PERMISSION FROM ELSEVIER

In spring a band of brainy rodents made headlines for zipping through mazes and mastering memory tricks. Scientists credited the impressive intellectual feats to human cells transplanted into their brains shortly after birth. But the increased mental muster did not come from neurons, the lanky nerve cells that swap electrical signals and stimulate muscles. The mice benefited from human stem cells called glial progenitors, immature cells poised to become astrocytes and other glia cells, the supposed support cells of the brain.

Astrocytes are known for mopping up excess neuro-transmitters and maintaining balance in brain systems. During the past couple of decades, however, researchers started suspecting astrocytes of making more complex cognitive contributions. In the 1990s the cells got caught using calcium to accomplish a form of nonelectrical signaling. Studies since then have revealed how extensively astrocytes interact with neurons, even coordinating their activity in some cases.

Perhaps even more intriguing, our astrocytes are enormous compared with the astrocytes of other animals?20 times larger than rodent astrocytes?and they make contact with millions of neurons apiece. Neurons, on the other hand, are nearly identical in all mammals, from rodents to great apes like us. Such clues suggest astrocytes could be evolutionary contributors to our outsized intellect.

The new study, published in March in Cell Stem Cell, tested this hypothesis. A subset of the implanted human stem cells matured into rotund, humanlike astrocytes in the animals' brains, taking over operations from the native mouse astrocytes. When tested under a microscope, these human astrocytes accomplished calcium signaling at least three times faster than the mouse astrocytes did. The enhanced mice masterfully memorized new objects, swiftly learned to link certain sounds or situations to an unpleasant foot shock, and displayed un-usually savvy maze navigation?signs of mental acuity that surpassed skills exhibited by either typical mice or mice transplanted with glial progenitor cells from their own species.

Alexei Verkhratsky, a glia researcher at the University of Manchester in England who was not involved in the mouse study, calls the work ?truly remarkable,? both conceptually and technically. He notes that the new results do not necessarily conflict with astrocytes' support role. Rather, Verkhratsky argues, the apparent advantages afforded by human astrocytes may be a consequence of their housekeeping abilities, underscoring the interdependence between glia and neurons.

Woman gives birth in Subway restroom in Nevada

(AP) ? It was just another day at work for Flora Vargas until a screaming woman burst into her Subway sandwich shop in Nevada on Friday and announced she was in labor.

After the pregnant woman raced for the women's restroom, assistant manager Vargas and her boss sprang into action, placing sandwich wrappers and trash bags on the floor for sanitation.

With Vargas' help, the mother gave birth on the restroom floor in Minden, 40 miles south of Reno, a couple minutes later.

"It was a boy. A beautiful boy," Vargas told The Associated Press. "He didn't cry when he came out. Then he cried, and I breathed easier knowing he was alive."

No customers were in the restaurant at the time of the 9:30 a.m. birth, but the restaurant was open. The only employees inside were Vargas and the manager.

Vargas helped calm down the mother and get her on the restroom floor, she said, and it was "a blessing" that paramedics from the East Fork Fire and Paramedic District arrived in time to assist in the delivery.

"The head of the baby was already out when she went to the floor," Vargas said. "The baby came out really, really fast. Fortunately, the emergency service people got here really fast."

Paramedics transported the mother and child to Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center, where hospital spokesman Jon Tyler said he could only disclose that both are healthy. Their names were not released.

Vargas said the mother told her that she was 21 and had three other children. The mother was accompanied by a sister at the time, she added.

East Fork Battalion Chief Ron Haskins said paramedics have delivered babies in odd places, but it's the first birth on a restaurant restroom floor that he can recall during his 30 years with the district.

"We've delivered babies in cars and restrooms at home, but it's all part of the job," he said. "It's one of the most positive parts of our job."

When she entered the business, Vargas said, the mother was "screaming real bad, 'I'm in labor. I'm going to have it right now.' My manager said, 'What should we do?' I said, 'It's an emergency and we have to do something.'

"He and I grabbed Subway wrappers and trash bags and rags that we use in here, and put them on the restroom floor so there was sanitation. Everything happened so fast," she added.

After the birth, the 30-year-old Vargas held the mother's hand and assured her the boy was healthy. The mother reacted by "crying a bit but seemed to be OK," she said.

Vargas said though she's "really happy" about how things turned out, she urged her boss to provide training to employees on how to deliver babies.

Sentencing set in Cleveland kidnap-rape case

CLEVELAND (AP) ? Three months after an Ohio woman kicked out part of a door to end nearly a decade of captivity, a onetime school bus driver faces sentencing for kidnapping three women and subjecting them to years of sexual and physical abuse.

Prosecutors are expected to detail Ariel Castro's daily assaults on the women, recounted in diaries that compared the women's experience to that of prisoners of war. With the possibility of the death penalty for a forced miscarriage taken off the table, Castro stands to get life in prison plus 1,000 years on Thursday.

Cuyahoga County prosecutor Tim McGinty said in a sentencing memorandum filed Wednesday that Castro, who chained his captives and fed them only one meal a day, "admits his disgusting and inhuman conduct" but "remains remorseless for his actions."

The memorandum says many of the specific charges in Castro's indictment reflect conduct documented by one of the women in her diary.

"The entries speak of forced sexual conduct, of being locked in a dark room, of anticipating the next session of abuse, of the dreams of someday escaping and being reunited with family, of being chained to a wall, of being held like a prisoner of war ... of being treated like an animal," it says.

The sentencing could take up to four hours, court officials said, with Castro, his attorneys, his victims and prosecutors getting a chance to speak. The legal team representing the women's interests declined to comment in advance on whether they would testify or send statements to the court.

In the court filing, McGinty offered new details of Castro's treatment of the women, who he said were kept "in a state of powerlessness" through physical, sexual and psychological violence.

"He made them believe that their physical survival depended on him, and he threatened to end their lives if they did not comply with his every demand," McGinty said.

Castro lured one of the women into his Cleveland home with the promise of a puppy for her son and tricked another by saying she could see his daughter, said McGinty.

He chained his captives by their ankles, fed them only one meal a day and provided plastic toilets in their bedrooms which were infrequently emptied, the filing said.

He menaced them with a gun, threatened them with tales of other captives, some of whom hadn't made it home, and at one point locked all of them in a vehicle in his garage for three days while he had a visitor.

Castro claimed he didn't have an exit strategy from his complicated double life and finally gave the women a chance to escape by leaving a door unlocked, the court filing said.

The women, each kidnapped separately when they accepted a ride from Castro on Cleveland's blue-collar west side, quickly escaped after Amanda Berry kicked out the door panel May 6 and Castro was arrested within hours. The women disappeared separately between 2002 and 2004, when they were 14, 16 and 20 years old.

There was no comment from Castro's defense team on the eve of sentencing.

Other horrific details of the women's ordeal had already emerged, including tales of being chained to poles in the basement or a bedroom heater or inside a van, with one woman forced to wear a motorcycle helmet while chained in the basement and, after she tried to escape, having a vacuum cord wrapped around her neck.

Castro repeatedly starved and beat one of the victims each time she was pregnant, forcing her to miscarry five times.

He forced the same woman on threat of death to safely deliver the child he fathered with another victim on Christmas Day 2006. The same day, prosecutors say, Castro raped the woman who helped deliver his daughter.

Prosecutors will ask the judge to prohibit Castro from ever seeing his daughter, now 6.

McGinty says experts will also discuss how Castro was able to keep the women captive for so long.

Berry, 27, made a surprise onstage appearance at a rap concert last weekend, and a second victim, Gina DeJesus, 23, made a few televised comments as a privacy fence was being erected around her house. The third victim, Michelle Knight, 32, appeared with Berry and DeJesus in a video in early July thanking the community for its support.

We each live in our own little world -- smellwise

[unable to retrieve full-text content]There are some smells we all find revolting. But toward a handful of odors, different people display different sensitivities. A pair of studies identifies the genetic differences that underpin the differences in smell sensitivity. The researchers tested 200 people for their sensitivity to 10 different chemical compounds. They then searched through the subjects' genomes for areas of the DNA that differed between people who could smell a given compound and those who could not.

Why Is the President Sneering at Pipeline Jobs?

Quite the cavalier attitude from a president who's in the middle of a potemkin "jobs" tour, with the national U-6 unemployment rate hovering above 14 percent. Discounting 2,000 American jobs as a "blip" might strike many unemployed Americans as an odd formulation. Beyond that, he's wrong on the numbers, ignoring the dramatically more optimistic findings of his own State Department. The Washington Post's fact-checker lays out the stats, awarding Obama "two Pinocchios" for his misleading characterization:

Apple faces another China crisis

Pegatron worse than Foxconn

Fruit themed toymaker Apple is facing fresh allegations of worker rights violations at Chinese factories of one of its suppliers Pegatron. China Labour Watch, has alleged that three factories of Pegatron violate a "great number of international and Chinese laws and standards".

These include using child labour, contract violations and excessive working hours. All things which Apple had distanced itself from. Both Apple and Pegatron said they would investigate the allegations immediately and said that it was committed to providing safe and fair working conditions throughout our supply chain. Pegatron's chief executive, Jason Cheng, said in a statement that the firm took the allegations "very seriously" too.

Apple, one of the world's biggest firms, has had to deal with similar claims in the past. when one of its biggest suppliers, Foxconn, was accused of violating worker rights. Li Qiang, executive director of China Labour Watch, claimed that its investigations have shown that labour conditions at Pegatron factories are even worse than those at Foxconn plants. The average weekly working hours in the three factories investigated by it were approximately 66 hours, 67 hours, and 69 hours, respectively.

In Pegatron Shanghai, the investigation uncovered that workers were forced to sign forms indicating that their overtime hours were less than the actual levels. Conditions at these factories are so poor that most workers refuse to continue working for long. More than 30 of the 110 new recruits at one of the factories had left within a period of two weeks.

Apple has claimed that was not true disputed those claims, saying that it had closely tracked working hours at all of these facilities. It thinks that Pegatron employees making Apple products worked 46 hours per week on average.

Other violations claimed by the campaign group include insufficient wages, poor working conditions, poor living conditions, difficulty in taking leave, abuse by management and environmental pollution.

Facebook refuses UN request on Somali pirates

Facebook

Facebook

NAIROBI, Kenya ? United Nations investigators hoped they would get some help from Facebook when they asked to see information on suspected pirates operating in Somalia.

But Facebook refused.

A report by the U.N. Monitoring Group on Somalia and Eritrea this month pointed out that while many private companies helped in the group's investigative work on matters such as piracy, al-Qaida-linked militants and government corruption, Facebook provided no such assistance.

"Despite repeated official correspondence addressed to Facebook Inc., it has never responded to Monitoring Group requests to discuss information on Facebook accounts belonging to individuals involved in hijackings and hostage-taking," the report said.

Facebook said in a statement Tuesday that the U.N. group had no legal authority to demand data from the company. "We therefore declined their request and referred them to law enforcement authorities," the company said in an e-mailed statement.

Facebook's refusal to share information with U.N. investigators comes as reverberations continue from the disclosure by Edward Snowden, a former contractor for the National Security Agency, that the NSA has cooperated with companies as Yahoo, Google and Facebook to access emails, video chats and pictures. U.S. officials have said the program is narrowly focused on foreign targets, and technology companies say they turn over information only if required by court order.

"Facebook has faced such pressures relating to privacy and the use of account information in various jurisdictions, even just for marketing purposes, that I would expect them to be very cautious about sharing personal information even with a U.N. Monitoring Group," said Matt Bryden, a former coordinator of the Somalia monitoring group.

Pirates use social networks
The nearly 500-page U.N. report said that investigations have confirmed that numerous piracy facilitators "are interlinked through various communication channels and employ social network services, such as Facebook."

In any case, two Somali pirates who spoke to The Associated Press said pirates don't use social networks for piracy work.

"There are more personal accounts than general ones for the pirates," said Bile Hussein, a Somali pirate commander in Gracad, a pirate base in central Somalia by phone. "We use emails for deals."

"Many of us keep our distance away from the Internet to avoid getting tracked or captured," said another pirate, Hassan Abdi.

The U.N. Monitoring Group would have been interested in access to non-public phone numbers and email addresses that might be listed on Facebook accounts, or to see what "friends" a pirate might have, said Bryden, now the director of Sahan Research, a think tank focusing on peace and security in the Horn of Africa

A page in Facebook's "Safety Center" titled "Information for Law Enforcement Authorities" says that a valid subpoena in connection with a criminal investigation is required to compel the disclosure of basic subscriber records. If a matter could result in the imminent harm of a child or risk of death or serious injury, a law enforcement official is asked to contact Facebook.

The U.N. Monitoring Group does not have subpoena power. Bryden said international companies often resist, at least at first, assisting the U.N. group because the companies aren't familiar with its work or authority.

"All it has is the force of the Security Council mandate that requests all member states and private entities ... to assist the Monitoring Group's efforts, so cooperation varies considerably," Bryden said.

Bradley Shear, a Washington D.C.-based lawyer who runs a blog focusing on social media law, noted that Facebook frequently cooperates with U.S. law enforcement officials investigating issues surrounding child safety, but he speculated that Facebook may be reluctant to help a U.N. body because the U.N. is trying to become involved with Internet regulation.

Shear said Facebook is not likely to be legally culpable just because Somali pirates or members of al-Shabab use their social media platforms.

"In general, absent knowledge that illegal activity is occurring on your platform, social/digital media platforms have little legal liability for the illegal activity that is occurring on their websites," Shear wrote in an email. "However, there is a growing trend to hold social media/digital media operators accountable for the illegal content/activity on their websites if they turn a blind eye towards it."

Social media use by al-Shabab militants in Somalia is common. Twitter shut down the account of an al-Shabab spokesman earlier this year after the micro-blogging site was used to post a hostage video and death threat, posts that violated Twitter's terms of service.

A new Twitter handle that the U.N. Monitoring group believes is run by a British member of al-Shabab opened a short time later and remains in use.

Keystone-related jobs a ?blip?? Really, Mr. President?

An energy research organization finds Barack Obama's latest comments on the Keystone XL pipeline "troublesome." Those same comments also have raised the hackles of the Canadian company proposing the pipeline.

Speaking over the weekend to The New York Times, President Obama said "the most realistic estimates are this might create about 2,000 jobs during the construction of the pipeline, which might take a year or two, and then after that we're talking about somewhere between 50 and 100 jobs in an economy of 150 million working people." On that basis, he claimed Keystone?s jobs creation would be ?a blip relative to the need.?

Kish, Dan (IER)Dan Kish, senior vice president for policy at the Institute for Energy Research, responds to those comments.

"The truth of the matter is, there is going to be direct employment and then a huge number of jobs because they have to make the steel, they have to buy the equipment, they have to do all the other things,? he explains.

?In an economy where so many millions of people are unemployed and underemployed, the idea that the president of the United States would scoff at any jobs ? especially these kinds of jobs, these family-raising wage jobs ? is troublesome."

Tweet to @IERenergy

Earlier this month, Consumer Watchdog released a report [PDF] claiming, among other things, that the initial estimate on the number of construction jobs for the Keystone project had been revised from 20,000 to 9,000. OneNewsNow contacted TransCanada for confirmation of that report and was given this response:

"TransCanada has not revised the number from 20,000 to 9,000. For the original Keystone XL project, there were 13,000 construction and 7,000 manufacturing jobs. After the original Keystone XL permit was denied, we split the project in two ? 9,000 for Keystone XL and 4,000 for Gulf Coast. And 7,000 manufacturing jobs that built equipment, pipe, pumps, etc. for both. So the 20,000 number still holds as a total."

According to The Washington Times, TransCanada ? as well as officials on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border ? ?reacted furiously? to Obama?s skeptical comments on the economic impact of the 1,600-mile Keystone XL pipeline.
