From Recipes to Stockpots - How to Host the Perfect Dinner Party

If you've been inspired by the show Come Dine With Me, you may be giving serious thought to hosting your very first dinner party. However, if you're keen for the evening to be a success but don't feel entirely confident that will be the case, a few helpful tips could be very handy.

The best place to start is with your guest list. By deciding who you want to invite, the type of evening they'll appreciate and the foods they do and don't like, you will be well on your way to planning a successful night.

The most important thing is that your guests enjoy themselves, so make sure you have some ideas for how to entertain them before the food is served, in between courses and after the meal is finished. The latter will no doubt depend on your invitees, as your after food entertainment may differ greatly for your boss than if it's an informal gathering for friends.

Your next consideration should be the food. Whether you're short of ideas or you're short of confidence, a great way to approach it is to seek out recipes for foods you love and that you think your guests will love. There are a great many cookbooks, online recipes and TV shows that will take you through the cooking process, step-by-step. The key here is just to practice before the big day. Do a trial run for yourself or for your partner, until you reach a stage where you feel confident everything will go to plan.

Many people forget that in their friends and family, they have a wonderful resource of knowledge to soak up. Whether it's your Mum, Dad, best friend or cousin, if there's someone you know that is a cooking master, why not pick their brains. This can be particularly helpful if there's a particular aspect of the meal you intend to cook that you're struggling with - such as getting the sauce right or how to manage your time.

As well as practicing, it's also vital that you give yourself plenty of time. If you're up against the clock and feeling rushed, the pressure may tell in the end results. When you're choosing a day for your dinner party, make sure you'll have plenty of time in the day to ensure you're feeling calm and composed.

Once you're confident in your cooking prowess, the only things that can let your meal down are your ingredients and cookware set. Taking the time to seek out quality ingredients will help turn your meal into a wonderful dish that people are still talking about right up until you decide to plan another party!

A good cookware set can have the same impact. Many a well-prepared meal has been ruined by old, misshapen cookware that has caused cooking times to be wrong. By investing in a good cookware set - including the likes of non stick saucepans and a stockpot - you will be doing your cooking skills justice.
