CSN: Markakis going for MRI on ailing neck

FORT MYERS, Fla. ? Nick Markakis, who was scratched from last Sunday?s game with neck spasms, is going to have an MRI on Monday, manager Buck Showalter said.

The Orioles right fielder who had three surgeries in 2012, first felt the neck spasms last Sunday. Showalter was hoping Markakis could play tomorrow, but said on Friday night he wouldn?t.

?I?m not going to downplay it,? Showalter said.

?When you get something that has kind of cropped up twice, information is a good thing. Until you get all the information, so we?ll see. I haven?t been told anything to make me think there?s a sense of urgency with that.?

Markakis had abdominal surgery in Jan. 2012, a procedure to remove his broken hamate bone in his right hand last June and one on his left thumb after CC Sabathia hit him with a pitch in September.

?I asked Nick about it and he goes, ?whatever.? We?ll see. It wasn?t much improved today though. About the same as yesterday. It gets better as the day goes on, and when he wakes up it?s real stiff,? Showalter said.

Markakis last played on Mar. 1, and is hitting .250 (4-for-12).
