The Board of Trustees for the university announced the decision late Wednesday night.
Sessoms was appointed as president in September of 2008. He previously served as president at the University of Delaware and Queens College of New York City.
In a release, Trustee Dr. Elaine Crider said, "We thank Dr. Sessoms for his work in guiding the University over the past four years...But as we grapple with the challenges of reducing staff and programs, continuing to improve our physical plant and attracting new students, the Board has decided to go in a different direction."
The Board says a temporary replacement for Sessoms will be announced in the next 48 hours. A new interim president will be named by mid-Jan. 2013 and will serve six to 18 months while the board looks for a permanent replacement.?
Sessoms told ABC 7's Sam Ford that although he has been removed as president, he remains a tenured professor at the university.
Last year, Sessoms came under fire for using university funds to pay for trips to places like Egypt and Hawaii, telling reporters his travel costs came from "university generated revenue."
