Over the course of the last 12 months, I've lost count of the sheer amount of applications that I've downloaded, tried, deleted, and in some cases tried again. When all is said and done though, there's a select group of apps which I use a whole lot more than others to the point that they've become part of everyday life. Here's a little list of what's been getting me through the week.

Pragmatism in Iowa could benefit Romney (AP)

MASON CITY, Iowa ? Iowa Republicans may be starting to choose with their heads rather than their hearts as the Jan. 3 caucuses approach.

The ascent of libertarian-leaning Ron Paul and the lack of an ideologically pure consensus conservative seem to be awakening a new sense of pragmatism in some Iowa Republicans. That bodes well for Mitt Romney, as a large chunk of undecided voters continues the search for someone capable of defeating President Barack Obama.

"A lot of the people I'm around are not Romney fans, but they are kind of acknowledging they think he's going to be the nominee, and that they'll plug their nose and vote for him," said Gwen Ecklund, Republican chairwoman in GOP-heavy Crawford County in conservative western Iowa.

A week before voting begins in the fluid Republican race, interviews with a dozen Iowa political operatives and party activists ? as well as internal polling by rival campaigns ? suggest that some Iowans are increasingly concerned about Paul, whose views often stray from GOP orthodoxy, and have begun to fall in line behind Romney instead of another candidate seen as more devoutly conservative but weaker against Obama.

Unlike Paul and his other opponents, there's room for Romney's support to grow. Public and private polling suggests he's more often the second choice of Republican caucus-goers than any other candidate, indicating that Republicans could be swayed in the coming week to support him over others.

Conversely, few see Paul, the ideological libertarian, as a substitute for their first choice of a hardline conservative. In a sign of Newt Gingrich's slide, Texas Gov. Rick Perry ? who is seeing a slight bump as the Iowa campaign nears its end ? is more often identified as a second choice than is Gingrich.

"When you have a race this fluid, second choices, I think, if you have good surrogates standing up and making the pitch for you in the caucuses, you may be able to dislodge people from their first choice," said John Stineman, a West Des Moines Republican and former caucus campaign manager for Steve Forbes.

Public polls show that at least half of caucus-goers are undecided or could still change their mind, meaning Romney, the former Massachusetts governor whose Mormon faith and reversals on social issues have left influential Iowa Christian conservatives feeling skeptical, now has an opportunity to try to seal the deal.

Mindful of that, Romney is entering the final phase of the Iowa campaign with a confident air ? and a push to win the contest after trying to lower expectations. He spent heavily here in 2008 only to lose big.

Romney was launching a bus tour of Iowa Tuesday and starting to make his closing argument ? essentially the same as his opening argument ? that he is the strongest Republican to take on Obama on the No. 1 issue, the economy. Romney also was dispatching surrogates from nearby states, including South Dakota Sen. John Thune, former Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman and former Missouri Sen. Jim Talent, to campaign in Iowa. His campaign also urged supporters during a conference call Monday to sign up to represent Romney at the caucuses ? essentially meetings of GOP activists in the state's 1,774 precincts ? and to stand up to speak on behalf of the campaign.

Romney planned to spend four full days in the state, by far his longest trip in four years, to woo a fickle GOP electorate that hasn't settled on a front-runner.

Of all the candidates, only former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum has been denied a moment in the spotlight ? even though he's scoured every corner of the state and, in recent days, has collected endorsements from key leaders in Iowa's influential social conservative movement. He urged more than 100 people in the ballroom of Mason City's historic Park Hotel on Tuesday to stick to their principles, saying: "We need this election to be about someone who is a conservative, and proud of it."

In a race with no shortage of leaders this year, Paul has been the latest to become a leading, non-establishment alternative to Romney. But the newfound status has brought new scrutiny over Paul's unorthodox, non-interventionist foreign policy views and statements that appeared in newsletters he published in the early 1990s when he was not serving in Congress.

Among the statements: "Homosexuals, not to speak of the rest of society, were far better off when social pressure forced them to hide their activities." Another newsletter passage said "if you have ever been robbed by a black teen-aged male, you know how unbelievably fleet-footed they can be." Paul previously said such material was the work of ghostwriters, while acknowledging he bore "some moral responsibility" for it.

It's all enough to worry some Iowa Republicans that Paul could marginalize the caucuses' impact should he win.

"The moderate and establishment Republicans are scared Ron Paul is going to have a good showing. If he wins Iowa, it's going to diminish the clout Iowa has," said Mark Greenfield, chairman of the Hamilton County GOP who initially backed Perry but switched to Romney within the last two weeks, describing him as an "electable leader."

Santorum put it this way: "The things most Iowans like about Ron Paul are the things he's least likely to accomplish," like Paul's plan to cut the deficit by $1 trillion in his first year, "and the things most Iowans are worried about about Ron Paul are the things he can accomplish."

Before Paul, Gingrich was at the top of the heap but he has slid in the wake of an onslaught of negative TV and radio ads ? from both Paul and allies of Romney's ? highlighting his collaboration on climate change with Democratic House Leader Nancy Pelosi and his consulting work for the federally backed mortgage giant Freddie Mac after he left the House. Leaflets noting his two divorces and acknowledged marital infidelity also have popped up across the state. Combined the attacks have damaged him ? perhaps irreversibly so.

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann experienced a burst in popularity several months ago but wasn't able to sustain it.

Perry, however, seems to be running slightly stronger than he has in months. He's drawn large, enthusiastic crowds during a bus tour and aides to rival candidates say favorability toward Perry is rising, though probably not enough to give him the late-game burst of momentum he'd need to win in Iowa. It's a sign that the roughly $5 million Perry has spent on advertising since late October, combined with more than $1 million from a super PAC that supports his candidacy, may be paying dividends.

Man killed amid Boxing Day shoppers in London

Photo credit: Getty Images | Eager shoppers descend on stores on Oxford Street for the Boxing Day sales in London, England. (Dec. 26, 2011)

LONDON - A teenager was fatally stabbed Monday after an argument broke out in a sports store on London's most famous retail street as thousands of shoppers flocked to Britain's capital seeking post-Christmas bargains.

The killing of the 18-year-old man on Oxford Street did little to deter shoppers crowding into neighboring stores in the landmark shopping district. Bargain hunters were also largely untroubled by a subway strike which badly disrupted the city's public transport services.

Selfridges ? close to the scene of Monday's stabbing and one of Britain's most popular department stores ? reported its biggest ever first hour of trading Monday morning, while the New West End Company, which represents traders on central London's shopping streets, reported 15 million pounds (US$23.5 million) in sales in the first three hours of trading.

"As ever, the West End's Boxing Day sales have attracted shoppers in their hundreds of thousands," said Jace Tyrrell, of the New West End Company.

Sue West, Selfridges' director of operations, said that ladies' accessories and jewelry were the most popular items snapped up. "Despite Tube disruptions ... we had record sales in our first hour," West said.

London's air ambulance helicopter had earlier rushed to the street following the stabbing, but the teenage victim died before medics could administer help.

Police, who erected a tent outside a Foot Locker sports store as they carried out investigations, said ten people had been arrested in connection with the death.

Det. Chief Insp. Mark Dunne, of London's Metropolitan police, said two groups of young people appeared to have become involved in a large-scale altercation.

Dunne said little more was known about the circumstances, but there was likely to be a large number of witnesses. "This is probably the busiest place in the United Kingdom right now, on the busiest shopping day," he told reporters at the scene.

On London's subway network, the ASLEF train drivers' labor union staged a one-day strike to demand extra pay and additional time off for members working on the public holiday.

Despite the disruptions, huge crowds ? some lining up outside stores from midnight ? rushed into department stores in London and other British cities as soon as doors opened early Monday.

The London Underground, the organization that manages the subway system, condemned the move, saying it was pointless and demonstrated "a complete disregard for our customers." Authorities said extra buses were running in main shopping areas to cater to the increased flow of travelers on one of the year's busiest shopping days.

The ASLEF union has warned it plans to stage three more strikes in January and February if the dispute is not resolved.

Nigerians fear more church attacks after 39 killed (AP)

MADALLA, Nigeria ? In the chaos after the Christmas terror attack on a Catholic church, one mortally wounded man cradled his wounded stomach and begged a priest for religious atonement. "Father, pray for me. I will not survive," he said.

At least 35 people died at St. Theresa Catholic Church and dozens were wounded as radical Muslim militants launched coordinated attacks across Africa's most populous nation within hours of one another. Four more people were killed in other violence blamed on the group known as Boko Haram.

It was the second year in a row that the extremists seeking to install Islamic Shariah law across the country of 160 million have staged Christmas attacks. Last year, a series of bombings on Christmas Eve killed 32 people in Nigeria.

On Monday, tried to clean the sanctuary of the damaged church, while one man wept uncontrollably amid the debris. Crowds gathered among the burned-out cars in the dirt parking lot, angry over the attack and fearful that the group will target more churches.

Rev. Father Christopher Jataudarde told The Associated Press that Sunday's blast happened as church officials gave parishioners white powder as part of a tradition celebrating the birth of Christ. Some already had left the church at the time of the bombing, causing the massive casualties.

At least 52 people were wounded in the attack, said Slaku Luguard, a coordinator with Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency. Victims filled the cement floors of a nearby government hospital, some crying in pools of their own blood.

Pope Benedict XVI denounced the bombing at his post-Christmas blessing Monday, urging people to pray for the victims and Nigeria's Christian community.

"In this moment, I want to repeat once again with force: Violence is a path that leads only to pain, destruction and death. Respect, reconciliation and love are the only path to peace," he said.

The African Union also condemned the attacks and pledged to support Nigeria in its fight against terrorism.

"Boko Haram's continued acts of terror and cruelty and absolute disregard for human life cannot be justified by any religion or faith," said a statement attributed to AU commission chairman Jean Ping.

On Sunday, a bomb also exploded amid gunfire in the central Nigeria city of Jos and a suicide car bomber attacked the military in the nation's northeast. Three people died in those assaults.

After the bombings, a Boko Haram spokesman using the nom de guerre Abul-Qaqa claimed responsibility for the attacks in an interview with The Daily Trust, the newspaper of record across Nigeria's Muslim north. The sect has used the newspaper in the past to communicate with public.

"There will never be peace until our demands are met," the newspaper quoted the spokesman as saying. "We want all our brothers who have been incarcerated to be released; we want full implementation of the Sharia system and we want democracy and the constitution to be suspended."

Boko Haram has carried out increasingly sophisticated and bloody attacks in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law across Nigeria. The group, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, is responsible for at least 504 killings this year alone, according to an Associated Press count.

Last year, a series of Christmas Eve bombings in Jos claimed by the militants left at least 32 dead and 74 wounded. The group also claimed responsibility for the Aug. 26 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Nigeria's capital Abuja that killed 24 people and wounded 116 others.

While initially targeting enemies via hit-and-run assassinations from the back of motorbikes after the 2009 riot, violence by Boko Haram now has a new sophistication and apparent planning that includes high-profile attacks with greater casualties.

That has fueled speculation about the group's ties as it has splintered into at least three different factions, diplomats and security sources say. They say the more extreme wing of the sect maintains contact with terror groups in North Africa and Somalia.

Targeting Boko Haram has remained difficult, as sect members are scattered throughout northern Nigeria and the nearby countries of Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

Analysts say political considerations also likely play a part in the country's thus-far muted response: President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the south, may be hesitant to use force in the nation's predominantly Muslim north.

Speaking late Sunday at a prayer service, Jonathan described the bombing as an "ugly incident."

"There is no reason for these kind of dastardly acts," the president said in a ceremony aired by the state-run Nigerian Television Authority. "It's one of the burdens as a nation we have to carry. We believe it will not last forever."

Online shopping jumps 16.4 pct on Christmas Day (AP)

NEW YORK ? A growing number of shoppers apparently need only the briefest of breaks before diving back in, especially if they can log in to shop.

IBM found that online shopping jumped 16.4 percent on Christmas Day over last year, and the dollar amount of those purchases that were made using mobile devices leaped 172.9 percent.

IBM tracks shopping at more than 500 websites other than Amazon.com, which is the largest. It found a huge increase in the number of shoppers making their purchases with iPhones, iPads and Android-powered mobile devices.

In fact, nearly 7 percent of all online purchases were made using iPads, just 18 months after the tablet computers were released by Apple Inc., said John Squire, chief strategy officer for IBM's Smarter Commerce unit.

The online uptick was continuing on Monday. As of 3 p.m. Eastern time, shopping was up 10 percent over Dec. 26, 2010. And the expectation was that the pace of buying would increase as the day wore on and consumers clicked on sales at various retailers.

Squire said consumers were chasing sales on both Sunday and Monday. The data did not show what portion of purchases was made using gift cards.

VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand PDS-ST415-VP

The VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand PDS-ST415-VP ($100 street) sounds like something that should be on the Hogwarts back-to-school recommended purchase list. But in reality (pun unavoidable), it's a portable scanner?one of the most portable available. If you need to scan on the go, and don't want to be weighted down with hardware, that alone makes it worth considering.

At 1.2 by 10.1 by 1.1 inches (HWD) and 0.4 pounds, you could argue that the PDS-ST415-VP is too big to call a magic wand. It certainly doesn't look as much like one as the PlanOn DocuPen Xtreme X05 ($369.99 direct 3.5 stars). However, both work essentially the same way for scanning. The sensor and rollers in both cases define the bottom. To scan, you start at the top of a page and sweep down, or start on the side and sweep across.

One other feature the two scanners share is that they don't need a computer to scan to. Instead they scan to memory and let you move the files to a computer later. Connect the PDS-ST415-VP by the supplied USB cable, and it will look like a USB drive to your computer so you can copy the files.

Setup and Scanning
There is not much to set up with this scanner. Just put in the two supplied AA batteries and insert a microSD or microSDHC card as memory to scan to. The only potential issue is that the scanner doesn't come with a memory card and there's no internal memory, so be sure you have one handy. According to the company, you can use cards with up to 32GB capacity.

Scanning is easy. The scanner offers one button to set it to color or black and white mode and another to set it to 300 or 600 pixels per inch (ppi). Simply choose your settings, and then scan. Just as important, there isn't much of a learning curve. I got acceptable scans starting with my first try, both for recognizing text, and for scanning photos well enough for, say, scanning an article and winding up with recognizable images in the photos.

Recognizing Text
In addition to setting up the hardware, you can optionally install Abbyy Screenshot Reader, which comes with the scanner and offers a limited ability to translate images of text into editable text. However, it's important to understand that Screenshot Reader is an OCR (optical character recognition) utility rather than a full-fledged OCR program.

The PDS-ST415-VP scans to JPG image file format. An OCR program would be able to recognize the text for at least one full file at a time. Screenshot Reader recognizes text showing on screen, and it can recognize only as much text as can fit on the screen.

Depending on your screen resolution, you may need to recognize a letter-size page of text in two or more pieces. In my tests using a 1,280 by 1024 screen resolution, for example, with the image zoomed in Photoshop to 33 percent and the text just fitting within the screen width, I had to recognize each page in three sections.

At smaller zoom sizes I could recognize more of the page, but the recognition accuracy dropped. At 33 percent zoom, the program read our Arial test page at font sizes as small as 8 points without a mistake and our Times New Roman test page at 12 points. At 12.5 percent, which is the largest zoom size that showed the full page at once, it couldn't read any font size without mistakes.

Other Issues
It's worth mention that although not needing a computer for scanning has the advantage of giving you less to carry with you, it has a disadvantage too. You can't see the scan and confirm that it's good enough to be usable until you connect to a computer, at which point you may no longer have the original handy to rescan. Depending on the situation, you may be better off skipping the scanner and taking a photo instead, so you can check the image quality on your camera or cameraphone's screen.

You can't count this too heavily against the PDS-ST415-VP, because it's pretty much standard today for portable scanners that don't need a computer, including, for example, the IRIScan anywhere 2 ($199, 3 stars) from I.R.I.S. and the Pandigital Personal Photo Scanner/Converter PanScn06 ($149.99, 3 stars). One the few exceptions is the Editors' Choice Visioneer Mobility ($199.99 direct, 4 stars), which lets you scan to a smartphone and see the results on the spot.

Despite this limitation, if you want to use a scanner rather than a camera, and you want one that's portable enough to carry with you virtually all the time, the PDS-ST415-VP is definitely in the running. When you compare prices with the alternatives, keep in mind that you'll need to buy a memory card and may want a more capable OCR program or a document management program as well. Even so, the VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand PDS-ST415-VP is a more than reasonable choice. It has little to no learning curve, it's easy to use, and its scan quality is up to the task.

Occupy The Rose Parade Fund Raiser Final Push!

On Tuesday we announced our fund raiser for banners and t-shirts at Occupy the Rose Parade. You guys stepped up immediately and gave just over $2,000! Amazing! Small donations too. Thank you everyone who donated.

Our goal is $3,000 total. Organizers have told us that's what they need to do their float at this year's Rose Parade right. We are very, very close.

Occupy the Rose parade has coordinated with Pasadena police. They have a First Amendment right to march in the parade. They are float number 44 (as in Obama the 44th president). The Rose Parade is viewed by 50 million Americans and 200 million people world wide. The organizers are expecting anywhere from 1,000 to 4,000 protesters to participate. Not only are there plenty of eyeballs to reach, five floats in the parade are sponsored by (wait for it) banks. Read all about their plans here.

So we are running this fund raiser one more day - this is last minute to give to allow time for the banners and t-shirts made in time for the event. Any amount you can give will make a difference.

Thank you so much for your donations!

Egyptians back at polls, calm in Cairo after clashes (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Egyptians returned to the polls on Wednesday in a staggered parliamentary election after five days of violence in Cairo that has cast a pall over the transition to democracy and drawn a U.S. rebuke of Egypt's security forces.

Tahrir Square and surrounding streets were quiet through the night for the first time in a week. A night earlier, police and soldiers had used tear gas and batons to chase protesters demanding an end to army rule out of the square.

The latest confrontations, in which 13 people have been killed, made for a turbulent backdrop to Egypt's first election since Hosni Mubarak was toppled in February. Even before the vote got under way in November, a flare-up in Tahrir killed 42.

Nine provinces, mostly outside the capital, were holding run-off votes on Wednesday and Thursday in the election that is being held over six weeks and ends on January 11.

The ruling army council, which took over from Mubarak, has said it will not let the transition be derailed and has pledged to hand power to an elected president by July. But protesters in the square want the army to return to barracks far sooner.

"God willing, we will complete the revolution by January 25 by bringing down the army council," said 25-year-old protester Mahmoud, who declined to give his full name. The uprising against Mubarak began on January 25 and lasted 18 days.

Near where he spoke, the authorities have erected walls of concrete blocks, barring access from the square on roads leading to the parliament, the cabinet and Interior Ministry where violence has been the most fierce.

A few hundred hardy protesters were still in and around the square on Wednesday, surrounded by streets strewn with rocks exchanged between them and security forces. Some protesters held up bullets and cartridge cases they say were used against them.

Traffic passed through other parts of the big square.

The clashes have driven a wedge between those determined to stay on the streets and other Egyptians frustrated by the turmoil, which has damaged the economy, and now desperate for a return of order. Many still see the army as the only institution capable of achieving this.

"All demonstrations should stop to end this violence until we finish elections and elect a president then all the demonstrators can voice their concerns through members of parliament," said Erian Saleeb, 64, who works in the tourist industry, which has been hammered as visitors have stayed away.

But many have been shocked by images of police and soldiers hitting protesters with batons even after they fell to the ground and, in one case, dragging a woman lying on the ground by her shirt that exposed her underwear, and then kicking her.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton this week referred to that incident of the beaten woman as "particularly shocking" and cited other cases of women protesters sexually assaulted.

"This systematic degradation of Egyptian women dishonors the revolution, disgraces the state and its uniform and is not worthy of a great people," she said, in some of the strongest U.S. criticism of Egypt's new rulers.

The United States, which Egypt under Mubarak as a staunch ally, gives Cairo $1.3 billion a year in military aid.

About 2,000 women marched to Tahrir on Tuesday dressed in black and flanked by male protesters who vowed to protect them from harassment. "The women of Egypt are a red line!" they chanted.

"What happened to the girl who was stripped and dragged was sheer savagery. We cannot be silent about this. I want someone from the military council to admit responsibility," said Sarah Rifaat, a 27-year-old environmentalist.

In a statement, the army council apologized, saying it "respects and appreciates Egyptian women and their right to protest and fully participate in political life." An army general said it was an isolated case and under investigation.

But other generals and their advisers have condemned the pro-democracy demonstrators, who they accuse of wreaking havoc.

Retired general Abdel Moneim Kato, an army adviser, told the daily al-Shorouk that anyone involved in incidents such as the burning of a building near Tahrir that held historic archives was "a vagrant who should be burnt in Hitler's incinerators."

One opposition group that has lowered its profile in the protests is the once-banned Muslim Brotherhood, whose Freedom and Justice Party now leads the election results after the first round, followed by ultra-conservative Salafi Islamists.

A large percentage of the individual - rather than party list - seats up for grabs in the run-offs will be contested between Muslim Brotherhood and Salafi candidates. Egypt's system involves a mixture of party lists and individual candidates.

Analysts say the Brotherhood has kept a low profile as it is determined to see the vote completed, putting it in a commanding position in the new assembly and securing its place in mainstream politics for the first time in its 83-year history.

Washington has reached out to Islamists in a shift in approach since the summer. A senior U.S. diplomat met Islamist and other newly elected members of parliament in the northern city of Alexandria, the embassy said on Tuesday.

FixYa Upgrades Its Q&A Service For Product Issues With Gamification And Some Realtime Data-Sharing

FixYaLogo_600_RGBWe first covered FixYa, the Q&A site for products, back in 2007, after the startup demoed at the TechCrunch40 DemoPit. Over the course of the next year, FixYa went on to raise $8 million in two rounds from Mayfield Fund and Pitango Venture Capital, with Chamath Palihapitiya joining the board of directors. It's been a few years since we've tapped into the startup's progress, but Founder & CEO Yaniv Bensadon told us that the company is now seeing 20 million unique visitors a month, with 650K users having answered questions from the 10 million product problems and solutions currently live on the site. And, since 2009, the company has been cash-flow positive.

Boise State's Kellen Moore closes a career like few others in college football history

LAS VEGAS ? Everybody in the Boise State football program has a joke to tell about their early impressions of senior quarterback Kellen Moore.

They call him a goofball and kid about his unimpressive size. They needle him about his arm strength and call him a football nerd.

?I don?t want to say he wasn?t always ?the man,? ? senior tight end Kyle Efaw said, ?but ??

Moore even makes fun of himself. He has been telling the story lately of his drive to Bronco Stadium with Efaw on the day of their first college game, the 2008 season opener against a woeful Football Championship Subdivision program.

?I remember driving down the hill, just scared to death to play Idaho State,? Moore said. ?Certainly, things have changed.?

Now the fear is on the other side of the line of scrimmage.

And the jokes have stopped.

Moore already has shattered the Football Bowl Subdivision record for career wins by a quarterback and will go for No. 50 on Thursday against Arizona State in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas (6:06 p.m. MST, ESPN).

Ask just about anyone in college football about Moore?s sterling career, and you get some variation of the same dead-serious answer.

?He fits among the all-time greats,? said Chris Fowler, the ?College GameDay? host who will call Moore?s college finale for ESPN. ?If winning is the measuring stick for a quarterback ? and all of them say it is ? he?s won more, and no starter will ever win more, in my opinion, than what he?s done.?

Moore (49-3) also ranks in the top five in FBS history in interception percentage (first), touchdown passes (second), pass efficiency (third), completion percentage (fourth) and passing yards (fifth).

He has earned first-team All-American honors, second-team Academic All-American honors and three conference offensive player of the year awards.

He became the first Heisman Trophy finalist in school history in 2010 (he was fourth) ? and is one of only 12 players in college football history with three straight top-10 finishes in Heisman voting. He also has been a finalist for the Maxwell, Davey O?Brien, Unitas Golden Arm and Manning awards.

And he has helped lift the Broncos to the upper echelon of college football with a chance to finish in the top 11 for the fourth straight season.

Before Moore, the Broncos had finished that high just once. He also has directed seven of the program?s 10 wins against ranked opponents and posted a 5-0 record against Bowl Championship Series-conference foes.

?Now you say Boise State and it?s relatively accepted around the country that Boise State?s a big-time program,? said Kirk Herbstreit, the ?GameDay? analyst who will provide color commentary on the MAACO Bowl broadcast. ?Kellen has been a starter for the past four years and had a lot to do with bringing Boise up to that level to where people really respect not just him, but this program.?

THE GAME SLOWS DOWN

Back in August 2008, before that nervy ride to the stadium for the Idaho State game, Moore (6-foot, 191 pounds), didn?t even think he had won the starting job.

He battled with senior Bush Hamdan in spring ball and fall camp. The night before he was named the starter, he called his mom to tell her he thought he?d be the backup.

?I still felt very unprepared,? he said.

That?s never been a problem since.

Moore, who has been studying video since his childhood as a coach?s son in Prosser, Wash., is renowned for his work habits. That preparation leads to the other qualities that set Moore apart from most other quarterbacks.

His poise. His awareness. His anticipation.

Offensive coordinator Brent Pease sometimes thinks he?s moving too slowly during the Broncos? ?Indy? tempo ? a no-huddle attack.

?It looks like he?s in slow motion,? Pease said. ?He is going fast. His mind?s working. He?s so far ahead of it and slowing it down that it looks so simple.?

Maybe too simple.

Moore has completed a career-high 74.1 percent of his passes this season and thrown a career-high 41 touchdown passes ? all while playing with an inexperienced, rebuilt corps of wide receivers.

Yet he has received fewer accolades this season than the past two years, when the national media fell in love with the story of the undersized quarterback from the small town playing on the blue field.

He finished eighth in Heisman Trophy voting and didn?t make any All-America teams.

?People got kind of numb to his numbers,? Fowler said. ?All those stats are Heisman-finalist worthy. ? It?s sad, but people didn?t really appreciate the year that he had.?

The same consistency that led to that snub ? Moore has thrown at least two touchdown passes in 25 straight games ? is what Boise State coach Chris Petersen admires most about his quarterback.

?Kellen?s like clockwork, always,? he said. ?That?s the beauty of coaching him.?

Plus, he rarely makes the major mistake.

Moore holds the FBS record for the lowest single-season interception rate (0.69 percent in 2009) and almost certainly will break the career mark.

He also has the Broncos in position to lead the nation in fewest sacks allowed for the second time in three years.

?The consistency. The decision-making. I don?t know if I?ve ever seen a guy so consistently make good decisions,? said Herbstreit, a former Ohio State quarterback. ?When you combine the way he processes information with the decision-making, with his accuracy, I don?t know what else is left from a quarterback. When you do those three things, you?re going to be able to do a lot of damage.?

FUTURE HALL OF FAMER?

Petersen has started to consider life without Moore. His optimistic spin: ?It?s going to be interesting.?

What will he miss most? That?s easy.

?Touchdowns. Wins. Completions,? Petersen said.

What has Moore meant to this program? That?s hard.

?It?s almost a ridiculous question,? he said. ?Everyone knows what he?s meant to the program. It?s hard to put that in words. ... We wouldn?t trade him for anything.?

Moore likely will leave Boise State without winning any major national award. He could have a more lasting place in college football history, though.

Fowler figures the wins record is safe at least until college football implements a season-lengthening playoff system.

And 10 years from now, if he?s not still playing professionally, he will become eligible for the College Football Hall of Fame.

Defensive lineman Randy Trautman, who played on the 1980 Division I-AA national championship team, is the only Bronco in the hall.

Five influential national media members told the Idaho Statesman that Moore should be a Hall of Famer ? and they don?t consider it a question.

?They shouldn?t have a College Football Hall of Fame if Kellen Moore is not in it,? said Joe Tessitore, an ESPN play-by-play announcer who has called many Broncos games.

Moore barely meets the eligibility criteria because the first rule is that a player must have earned first-team All-American honors from one of the five NCAA-recognized teams.

Moore made the 2010 Football Writers Association of America team, when the group was concerned Auburn quarterback Cam Newton would be declared ineligible.

That?s enough to meet the criteria, but Moore likely will compete for a spot with the likes of Tim Tebow and Colt McCoy.

?He should be remembered in this era of college football as one of the greats,? Tessitore said. ?He?s just one of those guys who even years from now is going to remind people of a certain era of college football. ? To me, Kellen Moore is the embodiment of what gets you excited about college football.?

Qualities like the excellence he exhibits in the pocket, eluding the pass rush and dissecting defenses.

Like the poise and humility he displays on the field and in the locker room, where he?s a popular teammate.

Like the joy with which he plays the game ? flashing that wide, bright smile every time he fires a touchdown pass.

?We?ll miss him in college football,? Herbstreit said, ?and wish him the best in the NFL.?

U.S. Cellular updating original Samsung Galaxy Tab to Android 2.3.5

Galaxy Tab

It might not be the belle of the ball any longer, but U.S. Cellular has approved an update for  the original 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab, bringing it some Gingerbread live in the form of Android version 2.3.5.  While it's not Honeycomb or Ice Cream Sandwich, it is a vast improvement over the Froyo (Android 2.2) build the Tab shipped with, and should breathe new life into your faithful electronic companion.  Besides the advantages of Gingerbread itself, the change log has a few nice bullet points:

  • VPN support
  • Improved volume control when playing a video or movie while listening with a headset
  • Google security patches:  DigiNotar certificate revocation; Libpng security update
  • Remove auto accept of Bluetooth paring for Handsfree Profile (HFP). This vulnerability allows a nearby third-party to auto connect to Bluetooth HFP and potentially access contact data on the mobile device.

Now, for the bad news.  The update is not an Over The Air (OTA) style affair, and must be done via the USB cable and a Windows computer.  This means that it's going to wipe away the data on your Tab, and of course involves software and driver installation on a PC.  Samsung has set up a nice support page for the issues that are bound to crop up, and of course the Android Central forums are full of people who can help -- don't be afraid to hit them up.  Check out the links if you're needing to update.

Thanks, Mark!

Bootleg liquor deaths hit 162 in eastern India (AP)

DIAMOND HARBOUR, India ? Police raided illegal distilleries and dismantled dozens of liquor dens Friday across an eastern Indian district where 162 people died after drinking methanol-tainted bootleg alcohol.

Twelve people were arrested in connection with making and distributing the cheap, illicit liquor, but police were still searching for the kingpin of the operation, District Magistrate Naraya Swarup Nigam said.

Many of the victims were day laborers, street hawkers and rickshaw drivers who gathered along a road near a railway station after work Tuesday to drink the booze they bought for 10 rupees (20 cents) a half liter, less than a third the price of legal alcohol.

They later began vomiting, suffering piercing headaches and frothing at the mouth, and by Friday morning 162 had died, Nigam said.

About 90 others, some in critical condition, were hospitalized in Diamond Harbour village for treatment. Doctors and other medical staff were working overtime to help.

Many homes had at least one victim in the nearby village of Sangrampur, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of Kolkata, the city formerly known as Calcutta.

Angry villagers ransacked some booze shacks, and police were tearing down others. West Bengal state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ordered an inquiry and promised a crackdown.

Illegal liquor operations flourish in India's urban slums and among the rural poor who can't afford alcohol at state-sanctioned shops.

Despite religious and cultural taboos against drinking among Indians, an estimated 5 percent ? roughly 60 million people ? are alcoholics. Two-thirds of the alcohol consumed in the country is illegal homemade hooch or undocumented smuggled liquor, according to The Lancet medical journal.

Bootleggers, often working in homes, hidden warehouses and even in forests, can turn a liter of genuine alcohol into 1,000 liters of bootlegged swill with chemicals and additives that usually cause no harm. However, sometimes it is mixed with cheap, toxic chemicals to increase potency and profit, with deadly consequences.

One or two people die each week from tainted liquor in India, according to the Indian Alcohol Policy Alliance, which fights alcohol-related problems. In 2009, at least 112 people died from toxic alcohol in western India.

Drinking alcohol contains ethanol, whereas highly toxic methanol ? a clear liquid that can be used as fuel, solvent or antifreeze ? can induce comas and cause blindness and is deadly in high doses.

Universal nabs young adult "Daughter of Smoke & Bone" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Universal Pictures has acquired the worldwide rights to the young adult-fantasy novel "Daughter of Smoke & Bone," the studio announced Wednesday.

The story by National Book Award finalist Laini Taylor centers on a 17-year-old art student who is raised by inhuman creatures. She eventually finds herself embroiled in a conflict between devils and angels.

The book was published this September by Little, Brown and is the first in a trilogy. The second entry is set for next September.

In a release touting the acquisition, Universal said the book has been included on a number of "best of" lists, including Amazon's Top 10 Books of 2011, Publishers Weekly Best Books 2011, and a New York Times Notable Children's Books of 2011.

"It is a hugely thrilling prospect to think about Universal and filmmakers translating my world onscreen and giving it a second life in such a grand way," Taylor said in a statement. "I'm over the moon."

Research on Insurance Fund Management in China Rural Area ...

?Abstract? As the advent of the 21st century, our country becomes an aging society before it becomes rich and structure and number of population age have greatly changed. Especially for a large agricultural country with a population of 1,300,000,000, 56% of which is rural population, aging brings about such a burden for both economic and social development and for elderly support in rural family that it is necessary to further disseminate rural social endowment insurance system. Since rural social endowment insurance system affects the lives of peasants of 56% of the total population, efficiency and effectiveness of funding management, which is the core component of this system, is the key to the implementation of endowment insurance system. Therefore, solving the funding of the endowment insurance reasonably is critical to solving the problems in rural endowment insurance in China. Only by perfecting funding management of rural endowment insurance can we ensure the profit of elderly peasants, promote rural economic development and reformational deepening, and effectively guarantee the stability and harmonious construction of New Socialistic Countryside. This article begins with the current situation of rural social endowment insurance and summarizes various problems as well as their causes. Based on these causes and successful experiences borrowed from foreign funding management of endowment insurance, in combination with national situation, a mode was proposed that fund raising responsibility should be assumed through nation, collectives, and individuals. National fiscal subsidies should become a stable funding source. We must found governmental fiscal supportive fund-raising mode, systemize the supplementary source from collective economic subsidies, and explore a new mechanism for fund raising by combining farmland circulation, exchange of agricultural product for insurance, and rural social endowment insurance system with family population policy. This article also points to establishing Chinese Rural Endowment Insurance Funding Management Model-Financial Institute Entrusted Model combining successful experiences of foreign countries and our national situation, delimiting explicitly administration management main body, entrusted body, and supervising body of the raised fund and the function and responsibility of each side, and fulfilling a professional division of investmental operation to form a reciprocal restriction system. Four fundamental principles were proposed for the inevestmental operation of rural social endowment insurance fund, which proposed that besides those traditional investment methods including bank deposit and national bond, new investment methods can also be applied such as real estate investment, enterprise bonds and stocks, industrial investment, entrust loan and capital usage leases. Finally, on the basis of absorbing success of foreign experiences, supervising situation of endowment fund was reformed, operational supervising system based on rural social security administration department was founded, the founding of professional operational supervising of endowment insurance fund as well as the evaluation index of the supervising was proposed. In addition, by reducing the investmental risk through building withdrawal mechanism of mutual fund companies, hopefully a brand-new model of fund supervising and management of rural social endowment insurance that is able to better solve existing problems will be established.

Focus on Senate after House OKs payroll tax cut

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The focus shifts to the Senate now that the House has ignored a White House veto threat and approved a payroll tax cut bill that also opens the door for an oil pipeline and spending cuts that Democrats oppose.

The House approved the Republican bill Tuesday by 234-193. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says the legislation cannot pass in his Democratic-run chamber, and he will force a vote to demonstrate its lack of support.

The two parties will eventually negotiate over the measure, which would also renew extra benefits for jobless people and prevent a steep cut in doctors' Medicare reimbursements.

Before leaving for the year, Congress also plans to tackle legislation financing agencies through next September, renewing Pentagon programs and creating a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced budget.

Challenge: Find That Trail [Search Research]

Challenge: Find That TrailGoogler Daniel Russell knows how to find the answers to questions you can't get to with a simple Google query. In his weekly Search Research column, Russell issues a search challenge, then follows up later in the week with his solution?using whatever search technology and methodology fits the bill. This week's challenge: Find that trail!

I may as well admit it: I'm a runner, and I love to run on the trails in the Santa Cruz mountains near home. It's one of the great reasons to live near the Googleplex?there are wonderful hills to run not very far away. Above is a trail not so far from home.?

Last week I was running near here on a hilly trail just west of Mountain View in the city of Los Altos Hills. They have a wonderful set of trails that wind all over the place, up hill, down dale, and all over hither and yon. ?

Sometimes I'll go running and just see where I end up. ?It only takes a turn or two before I can find a new trail. ?

That's what I did this past weekend?I started running and made a few random turns, ending up on a trail that I'd never seen before! ?What I *did* find was a sign-post that said "Wallace Stegner." ?Aha! ?I was on a trail named for the great writer of the American West! ?

I turned around, and ran back the way I'd come, and an hour later was back home trying to find the start of that trail on a map. ?

It took me a while, but eventually I was able to find it. ?

Can you find the Wallace Stegner trail starting point? ?(There are apparently two streetside entrances, but I was only able to find one.) ?

The correct answer will be either a street address or a lat/long. ? (Just saying which street it's on isn't enough detail.) ?

When you post your answer in the comments, be sure to say HOW you found it and HOW LONG you took to find it!?

Search on!?
