Pacific Bluefin tuna caught off the coast of California have been found to have radioactive contamination from last year's Fukushima nuclear accident.

The fish would have picked up the pollution while swimming in Japanese waters, before then moving to the far side of the ocean.

Scientists stress that the fish are still perfectly safe to eat.

However, the case does illustrate how migratory species can carry pollution over vast distances, they say.

"It's a lesson to us in how interconnected eco-regions can be, even when they may be separated by thousands of miles," Nicholas Fisher, a professor of marine sciences at Stony Brook University, New York, told BBC News.

Fisher and colleagues report their study in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

They examined the muscle tissues of 15 Bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) taken from waters off San Diego in August 2011, just a few months after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

These were animals whose parents would have spawned in Japanese waters and spent one to two years locally before heading to feeding grounds in the eastern Pacific.

Professor Nicholas Fisher was 'stunned' to find the radioactive signal in bluefin tuna.

All the fish examined in the study showed elevated levels of radioactive caesium - the isotopes 134 and 137.

Caesium-137 is present in seawater anyway as a result of the fallout from atomic weapons testing, but the short, two-year half-life of caesium-134 means the contamination can be tied directly to Fukushima. There is no other explanation for the isotope's presence.

The measured concentrations were about 10 times the total caesium radioactivity seen in tuna specimens taken from before the accident.

As a control, the team also examined Yellowfin tuna, which are largely residential in the eastern Pacific.

These animals showed no difference in their pre- or post-Fukushima concentrations.

The research is likely to get attention because Bluefin tuna is an iconic species and a highly valuable fishery - thousands of tonnes are landed annually.

But consumers should have no health concerns about eating California-caught tuna from last year, the team says.

The levels of radioactivity are well within permitted limits, and below those from other radioisotopes that occur naturally in the environment, such as potassium-40.

"The potassium was about 30 times higher than the combined radio-caesium levels. If you calculate how much additional radioactivity there is in the Pacific Bluefin tuna caught in California relative to the natural background - it's about 3%," said Prof Fisher.

The scientists even calculated how much radioactivity might have been present in the fish before they swam across the Pacific (it would have fallen over time) and figured it could have been 50% above background levels; but, again, this would still have met the legal requirements for safe consumption.

Tuna caught in the coming months will be subjected to new tests. These animals would have spent much longer in Japanese waters and so conceivably could have a very different pollution load.

The team also believes the investigation should be extended to other migratory species that frequent Japanese waters.

Fukushima pollution is potentially a very useful tool to trace the origin and timing of animal movements.

Because of their very predictable decay rates, the caesium isotopes and their ratio to each other can be used like a clock to work out when a particular migration took place.

"There's been a lot of really nice electronic tagging work, but any tag you put on a fish shows you what that animal will do from this point forward. What it can't tell you is about the past, and that's what these tracers can do," explained the study's lead author Dan Madigan from Stanford University.

"The logical next step is to look at other species that do what the Bluefin do? migrate from Japan.

"Right now, we have the sampling in place to look at sea turtles, sharks, other fish, potentially whales, and some seabird species as well. This will give us information about the transport [of the contamination] by the animals and it will tell us about the migratory patterns of the animals," he told BBC News.

To close out the idea that Microsoft is doing the piracy, the stunning Google data report reveals over 2.5 million requests to remove URLs and targeted sites that are believed to be violating Microsoft's copyrights. One of the most frequent complaints from Microsoft involve illegal downloads of Microsoft's operating system and other?proprietary?software. According to

Business Week, Microsoft submitted over 536,716 requests to Google in the past month alone. Google will investigate and remove URLs and targeted websites from search results when the content is plagiarized or steals copyrighted intellectual property.

It is a bit of a surprise that a software maker, Microsoft, filed more complaints than the entertainment industry giants who are trying to fight extensive online piracy. Microsoft did not have a comment to make about Google's report, and the report does not give detailed information about the requests, beyond the illegal operating system and other software downloads.

Google set up and conducted a review of complaints to get a better understanding of copyright and other intellectual property abuses. The review covered requests to remove sites or pages with copyright infringing content from its search results, and the requests dated back to July 2011.

Now Google's Transparency Report has a page that shows the the monthly URL removals that came from complaints about copyright infringement. The Transparency Report gives options of "all time" since July 11, 2011, "the past month" and other time periods. The report for the latest month, ending on May 25, showed the following:?

1,255,402 requests to remove URLs.?

24,374 Targeted Domains were identified in the Transparency Report. The list of top targeted domains includes Filestubes, Torrentz and Pirate Bay. The total number of targeted domains is 105,928.

1,314 Copyright owners and their complaints are listed in the Transparency Report. Joining Microsoft were NBC Universal, which took second place in the number of complaints against?3,728 targeted domains and 165,662 URLs in the latest month. BPI Ltd represents the British recording industry and complained about?551 targeted domains and 51,087 URLs in the latest month. Other major copyright owners included SONY Music, Paramount Pictures, EMI, and even Porn Pros.

1,099 Reporting Organizations contributed requests. Marketly Llc represented two copyright owners and led the pack with?2,197,293 URLs and?18,997 targeted domains. In second place was NBC Universal representing itself and submitting?1,005,765 urls and?15,619 targeted domains. Other reporting organizations included Takedown Piracy Llc, and Remove Your Content Llc.?

Sometimes the X-Prize foundation gets a little ahead of itself. We couldn't get a private mission to the moon off the ground and apparently we can't built a tricorder either. But, we can take baby steps. Presumably that's what the newest X Challenge is all about. The group has teamed up with a certain Finnish phone maker to introduce the Nokia Sensing X Challenge. Rather than dive head first into Star Trek tech, the two are offering $2.25 million to further the development of health sensors and their associated technology. Nokia's interest is clear: it's widely expected that those tricorders of our dreams will one day become a reality and take the form of our cellphones. The challenge will actually be broken up into three different events to be held over the next three years, with many of the same competitors expected to follow up by entering Qualcomm's competition. BEIJING (Reuters) - The brother of blind activist Chen Guangcheng has fled his village in northeastern China, evading a security clampdown to seek help from lawyers for his son who has been detained in a case that has become a rallying point among rights activists.

Chen Guangfu, the eldest brother of Chen Guangcheng, told Reuters that he walked out of his home in Shandong province at 3 a.m. (0700 GMT) on Tuesday, eluding the increased number of sentries near his village by avoiding roads and running through fields. He arrived in Beijing on Wednesday evening after a six-hour journey by car.

His activist brother escaped Dongshigu village in late April after 19 months of detention at home, following a similar route to the capital before taking refuge in the U.S. embassy, where he stayed for six days and sparked a diplomatic crisis between China and the United States.

That crisis, which overshadowed a visit by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, was finally defused on Saturday when China allowed Chen to fly to the United States to study. But while Chen Guangcheng spent his first few days in New York after years of jail and detention, most of his family back home in Shandong has remained under a security clampdown.

The 55-year-old Chen Guangfu, in a rare interview since his brother escaped in April, recounted details of his own torture and reprisals by authorities since his brother's escape.

He said he was restricted from leaving the village and that police in Shandong warned him they would increase the sentence for his son, Chen Kegui, who is being held on an attempted murder charge, if he gave interviews.

"I feel since they are already doing this, why can't I say something?" Chen Guangfu said late on Wednesday in a teahouse in western Beijing. "I have the power to speak up."

"I told them their claims have no legal basis, but are based on power or by their will to determine Kegui's sentence. On this point, I'll never be able to accept it," he said, adding he planned to return to his village soon.

Local government and public security bureau officials were not immediately available for comment.

Chen Kegui, 32, was charged with "intentional homicide" for using knives to fend off local officials who burst into his home on April 27, the day after they discovered his blind uncle had escaped. He could face the death penalty. His lawyers, denied access to him on Friday, said he did not kill anyone.

Chen Guangfu's wife, Ren Zongju, also may be indicted for "harboring" her son, a charge punishable by up to 10 years jail, lawyers said. She was detained on April 29 and freed on bail. His daughter-in-law, Liu Fang, has been in Beijing for the past three weeks seeking lawyers for her husband.

Reprisals began soon after Chen's escape was discovered. Just after midnight on April 27, men in plainclothes scaled the walls of Chen Guangfu's home and kicked open its doors. They put a hood over him and took him to a police building. There, he said, they handcuffed him, bound his feet in iron chains, slapped him and stomped on his feet.

His captors lifted his handcuffed hands from the back so he couldn't sit straight and used his belt to whip his hands. The beatings lasted "a long time" and his left thumb lost feeling, he said.

"How did Guangcheng escape?" police asked him repeatedly.

The Foreign Ministry has said that Chen Guangcheng was a "free citizen" after his release from jail in 2010. But the walls and guards that penned him in his home and kept supporters and reporters out reflect the pervasive informal controls used to throttle dissent in China.

His elder brother's account illustrates the pressure authorities put on family members of dissidents and the hard line taken against Chen Guangcheng's family. Their treatment has encouraged lawyers and advocates to challenge what they see as the ruling Communist Party's stifling of lawful dissent.

A farmer and an odd-job laborer, Chen Guangfu said he told the police the full account of his brother's escape after they mentioned the names of activists and villagers involved. He also told police he had an obligation to help his younger brother, and stressed that he had already completed his sentence and become a "free citizen".

"I don't think he's a criminal. I don't think I'm in the wrong for helping a free citizen," he told police.

"UNFAIR, ILLEGAL"

After police took Chen Guangfu into custody, a second group of men went to his home and beat his wife and son, Chen Guangfu said. His wife later told him uniformed police charged in with shields and rubber truncheons and resumed beating her and Chen Kegui, who was by then bleeding and crying out for help. It was around this time Chen Kegui took a kitchen knife and slashed three officials.

Chen Kegui is being held in a detention centre in Yinan and authorities have barred family and the lawyers they chose from visiting or representing him, his father said.

Police told Chen Kegui's lawyers that he had been appointed two lawyers from the state-run Yinan legal aid centre. Officials at the centre said they have no knowledge of the case.

"I think this is unfair and illegal," said Chen Guangfu, a dark and lanky former high school teacher. "Based on my understanding of Chen Kegui, he will never refuse the intervention of outside counsel. From Guangcheng's case, he understands thoroughly that these so-called 'legal aid lawyers' are useless."

Chen Guangfu said he was "extremely pessimistic" about his son's prospects.

Chen Kegui's wife Liu, also present, told Reuters that she hoped her husband's case would be treated like "a normal, criminal case". Her 5-year-old son, Chen Fubin, is back in Shandong.

"He (Chen Kegui) must be heavily injured, I'm worried about his physical state," she said, her voice breaking. "Inside, he might be subject to beatings."

The two lawyers she chose to represent Chen Kegui challenged the Yinan County Public Security Bureau for "illegal" efforts to deny them access to their client, in a letter to the Yinan police chief published on a microblog on Monday.

Before he left for the United States on Saturday, Chen Guangcheng predicted the authorities' drive to manipulate his nephew's case would fail and increase public discontent over an episode that has renewed international focus on China's human rights and legal system.

Chen Guangfu also provided new detail on his brother's escape. The blind Chen Guangcheng left on the morning of April 20, scaled eight walls, some as high as four meters, and slept in a pig sty, he said.

"I tried too to follow his escape route, there were two walls I didn't dare to scale," Chen Guangfu said.

The elder Chen said he helped by contacting activists He Peirong and Guo Yushan after learning his brother had left his village. The two activists drove down from Beijing and arrived at Tai'an city in Shandong to pick Chen Guangcheng up.

Asked for his thoughts about his brother in the United States, Chen Guangfu said: "I think if he has a chance, he should take us there to have a look.

"So many people have said bad things about the United States. Someone even said he was like a dog that was kicked out of the U.S. embassy," he said. "But ultimately, he ended up in America. So I think the criticisms aren't justified."

"Give me a place to stand on and I'll open any damn bottle." Okay, maybe Archimedes never uttered those exact words. But his principle of leverage is the basis for the classic metal bottle opener?and also works with an odd variety of objects.

Put a one-handed stranglehold on the bottleneck, and use a [1] DISPOSABLE PLASTIC LIGHTER (a longtime fave) or a [2] USB DRIVE as a lever (and a knuckle as a fulcrum) to pop the top?and learn a refreshing lesson in applied physics.

An old standby (with a high spill factor): Place the bottle top in a door's [3] METAL STRIKE PLATE, letting the crown catch on an inside edge; pull back on the bottle.

The squarish opening of a [4] CAR SEATBELT LATCH works surprisingly well. Never try this in a moving vehicle.

Position the fang-like teeth of a [5] STAPLE REMOVER under the crown and gently pull up, working your way around the cap until it's loose enough to pull off. This "uncrimping" can also be used with a [6] METAL NAIL FILE or a [7] KEY.

Of course, your emergency beer-bottle-opening tool kit can include, you know, real tools: A [8] FLAT-HEAD SCREWDRIVER decrimps nicely, as do [9] WIRE CUTTERS, standard [10] PLIERS?or, better yet, those of the [11] NEEDLE-NOSE variety.

There is a brute-force alternative to decrimping for those lacking patience or manual dexterity. Clamp the bottle between your thighs and apply upward thrust to the cap's lip with the edge of a [12] METAL RASP, a [13] BUBBLE LEVEL, or an electronic gadget, like an early [14] IPOD NANO. Swing the gate of a large [17] CARABINER inside and use it to gain a purchase on the bottom of the crown; with the spine hooked over the cap, firmly pull up. [18] COUNTERTOP Hook the cap's lip on the edge of a hard countertop (not, God forbid, on an antique sideboard) and rap the cap with the heel of your palm.
