U.S. Cellular updating original Samsung Galaxy Tab to Android 2.3.5

It might not be the belle of the ball any longer, but U.S. Cellular has approved an update for  the original 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab, bringing it some Gingerbread live in the form of Android version 2.3.5.  While it's not Honeycomb or Ice Cream Sandwich, it is a vast improvement over the Froyo (Android 2.2) build the Tab shipped with, and should breathe new life into your faithful electronic companion.  Besides the advantages of Gingerbread itself, the change log has a few nice bullet points:

• VPN support
• Improved volume control when playing a video or movie while listening with a headset
• Google security patches:  DigiNotar certificate revocation; Libpng security update
• Remove auto accept of Bluetooth paring for Handsfree Profile (HFP). This vulnerability allows a nearby third-party to auto connect to Bluetooth HFP and potentially access contact data on the mobile device.

Now, for the bad news.  The update is not an Over The Air (OTA) style affair, and must be done via the USB cable and a Windows computer.  This means that it's going to wipe away the data on your Tab, and of course involves software and driver installation on a PC.  Samsung has set up a nice support page for the issues that are bound to crop up, and of course the Android Central forums are full of people who can help -- don't be afraid to hit them up.  Check out the links if you're needing to update.

Bootleg liquor deaths hit 162 in eastern India (AP)

DIAMOND HARBOUR, India ? Police raided illegal distilleries and dismantled dozens of liquor dens Friday across an eastern Indian district where 162 people died after drinking methanol-tainted bootleg alcohol.

Twelve people were arrested in connection with making and distributing the cheap, illicit liquor, but police were still searching for the kingpin of the operation, District Magistrate Naraya Swarup Nigam said.

Many of the victims were day laborers, street hawkers and rickshaw drivers who gathered along a road near a railway station after work Tuesday to drink the booze they bought for 10 rupees (20 cents) a half liter, less than a third the price of legal alcohol.

They later began vomiting, suffering piercing headaches and frothing at the mouth, and by Friday morning 162 had died, Nigam said.

About 90 others, some in critical condition, were hospitalized in Diamond Harbour village for treatment. Doctors and other medical staff were working overtime to help.

Many homes had at least one victim in the nearby village of Sangrampur, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of Kolkata, the city formerly known as Calcutta.

Angry villagers ransacked some booze shacks, and police were tearing down others. West Bengal state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ordered an inquiry and promised a crackdown.

Illegal liquor operations flourish in India's urban slums and among the rural poor who can't afford alcohol at state-sanctioned shops.

Despite religious and cultural taboos against drinking among Indians, an estimated 5 percent ? roughly 60 million people ? are alcoholics. Two-thirds of the alcohol consumed in the country is illegal homemade hooch or undocumented smuggled liquor, according to The Lancet medical journal.

Bootleggers, often working in homes, hidden warehouses and even in forests, can turn a liter of genuine alcohol into 1,000 liters of bootlegged swill with chemicals and additives that usually cause no harm. However, sometimes it is mixed with cheap, toxic chemicals to increase potency and profit, with deadly consequences.

One or two people die each week from tainted liquor in India, according to the Indian Alcohol Policy Alliance, which fights alcohol-related problems. In 2009, at least 112 people died from toxic alcohol in western India.

Drinking alcohol contains ethanol, whereas highly toxic methanol ? a clear liquid that can be used as fuel, solvent or antifreeze ? can induce comas and cause blindness and is deadly in high doses.

'Teen Mom' Amber Portwood in car accident

Yesterday, Portwood was faced with the possibility of going to jail after violating her probation, and now, Leah's mom is dealing with the consequences of rear-ending a man's vehicle in Indiana.

Sigh.

E! News learns that the accident happened yesterday at 8:08 p.m. in Anderson, Ind. Portwood was at fault for following the 2003 Saturn S12 car too closely, which resulted in hitting the car with her 2005 Cadillac STS when the other driver decided to suddenly brake.

The report estimates the damages to the man's car to be up to $2,500.

Report: 'Teen Mom' Amber violated probation

She claimed that "the car in front of her slammed on her breaks and suddenly made a turn," also saying that the other person didn't use a signal, although he says he did.

"This guy slammed on his brakes in front of me when I was on my way to see my mom. It barely scratched the car though," Portwood tells E! News. "I wasn't even going the full speed limit. I was slowing down and boom, he slammed on his brakes. I guess they missed their turn and stopped real fast to turn. It sucks."

Universal nabs young adult "Daughter of Smoke & Bone" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Universal Pictures has acquired the worldwide rights to the young adult-fantasy novel "Daughter of Smoke & Bone," the studio announced Wednesday.

The story by National Book Award finalist Laini Taylor centers on a 17-year-old art student who is raised by inhuman creatures. She eventually finds herself embroiled in a conflict between devils and angels.

The book was published this September by Little, Brown and is the first in a trilogy. The second entry is set for next September.

In a release touting the acquisition, Universal said the book has been included on a number of "best of" lists, including Amazon's Top 10 Books of 2011, Publishers Weekly Best Books 2011, and a New York Times Notable Children's Books of 2011.

"It is a hugely thrilling prospect to think about Universal and filmmakers translating my world onscreen and giving it a second life in such a grand way," Taylor said in a statement. "I'm over the moon."

?Abstract? As the advent of the 21st century, our country becomes an aging society before it becomes rich and structure and number of population age have greatly changed. Especially for a large agricultural country with a population of 1,300,000,000, 56% of which is rural population, aging brings about such a burden for both economic and social development and for elderly support in rural family that it is necessary to further disseminate rural social endowment insurance system. Since rural social endowment insurance system affects the lives of peasants of 56% of the total population, efficiency and effectiveness of funding management, which is the core component of this system, is the key to the implementation of endowment insurance system. Therefore, solving the funding of the endowment insurance reasonably is critical to solving the problems in rural endowment insurance in China. Only by perfecting funding management of rural endowment insurance can we ensure the profit of elderly peasants, promote rural economic development and reformational deepening, and effectively guarantee the stability and harmonious construction of New Socialistic Countryside.This article begins with the current situation of rural social endowment insurance and summarizes various problems as well as their causes. Based on these causes and successful experiences borrowed from foreign funding management of endowment insurance, in combination with national situation, a mode was proposed that fund raising responsibility should be assumed through nation, collectives, and individuals. National fiscal subsidies should become a stable funding source. We must found governmental fiscal supportive fund-raising mode, systemize the supplementary source from collective economic subsidies, and explore a new mechanism for fund raising by combining farmland circulation, exchange of agricultural product for insurance, and rural social endowment insurance system with family population policy. This article also points to establishing Chinese Rural Endowment Insurance Funding Management Model-Financial Institute Entrusted Model combining successful experiences of foreign countries and our national situation, delimiting explicitly administration management main body, entrusted body, and supervising body of the raised fund and the function and responsibility of each side, and fulfilling a professional division of investmental operation to form a reciprocal restriction system. Four fundamental principles were proposed for the inevestmental operation of rural social endowment insurance fund, which proposed that besides those traditional investment methods including bank deposit and national bond, new investment methods can also be applied such as real estate investment, enterprise bonds and stocks, industrial investment, entrust loan and capital usage leases. Finally, on the basis of absorbing success of foreign experiences, supervising situation of endowment fund was reformed, operational supervising system based on rural social security administration department was founded, the founding of professional operational supervising of endowment insurance fund as well as the evaluation index of the supervising was proposed. In addition, by reducing the investmental risk through building withdrawal mechanism of mutual fund companies, hopefully a brand-new model of fund supervising and management of rural social endowment insurance that is able to better solve existing problems will be established.

Focus on Senate after House OKs payroll tax cut

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The focus shifts to the Senate now that the House has ignored a White House veto threat and approved a payroll tax cut bill that also opens the door for an oil pipeline and spending cuts that Democrats oppose.

The House approved the Republican bill Tuesday by 234-193. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says the legislation cannot pass in his Democratic-run chamber, and he will force a vote to demonstrate its lack of support.

The two parties will eventually negotiate over the measure, which would also renew extra benefits for jobless people and prevent a steep cut in doctors' Medicare reimbursements.

Before leaving for the year, Congress also plans to tackle legislation financing agencies through next September, renewing Pentagon programs and creating a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced budget.

Challenge: Find That Trail [Search Research]

Googler Daniel Russell knows how to find the answers to questions you can't get to with a simple Google query. In his weekly Search Research column, Russell issues a search challenge, then follows up later in the week with his solution?using whatever search technology and methodology fits the bill. This week's challenge: Find that trail!

I may as well admit it: I'm a runner, and I love to run on the trails in the Santa Cruz mountains near home. It's one of the great reasons to live near the Googleplex?there are wonderful hills to run not very far away. Above is a trail not so far from home.?

Last week I was running near here on a hilly trail just west of Mountain View in the city of Los Altos Hills. They have a wonderful set of trails that wind all over the place, up hill, down dale, and all over hither and yon. ?

Sometimes I'll go running and just see where I end up. ?It only takes a turn or two before I can find a new trail. ?

That's what I did this past weekend?I started running and made a few random turns, ending up on a trail that I'd never seen before! ?What I *did* find was a sign-post that said "Wallace Stegner." ?Aha! ?I was on a trail named for the great writer of the American West! ?

I turned around, and ran back the way I'd come, and an hour later was back home trying to find the start of that trail on a map. ?

It took me a while, but eventually I was able to find it. ?

Can you find the Wallace Stegner trail starting point? ?(There are apparently two streetside entrances, but I was only able to find one.) ?

The correct answer will be either a street address or a lat/long. ? (Just saying which street it's on isn't enough detail.) ?
